Whole!! without waste ;D - Brown Hawk-Owl ( Ninox scutulata) Catch it in midair, go back to the perch, wait for Neon to setup his gear, while keep on biting on the bat. You want some? The bat is still moving, so I'll squeeze some more life out of it. As it might damage my crop when it's still alive and start trashing inside. I'll wait till there's no movement for awhile. Then I'll swallow it whole... Burp....and clean my beak on the branch... All taken with 5DM2 + 600mm L f4 IS + 2x Kenko TC + 580EX II, f4.5, 1/50 sec, ISO 640, Tripod-Gimbal support, remote shutter, MF. Used ACR red eye reduction on the devilish eyes.. Lost lots of blood to the mossies but it's all worth it!! ;D

We reached Candaba with the sun still below the cloudy horizon. We saw this bird hopping at the side of the road and since there's this ISO number 6400 that my 5D2 is capable, why not have a go at it and see what the results will be. I was surprised at the low amount of noise and even got a presentable photo. Siberian Rubythroat ( Luscinia calliope) 5D2 + 600mm L f4 IS + 2x Kenko TC, f4, 1/200 sec, ISO 6400, Tripod-Gimbal support, manual exposure in available light, In body High ISO noise reduction - ON. Shooting distance - 21.8m

Here's what I got, today, using a flash. It's near to impossible to MF in the dark!! A spot light to help focus would have been great. 5D2 + 600mm f4 IS + 2x Kenko TC + 580EX II, f4, 1/50 sec, ISO 640, Tripod-Gimbal suport Messed around with the eyes on this one..

Still could not do a full sortie yet, so what else could I do but visit my favorite birding place - UPD With a cooperative family of at least 7 LTS that lords the grounds of the MSI I got to try the invisible ninja technique and got close. Here's my first photos for 2010..woohoo!!! Long-tailed Shrike ( Lanius schach) 5D2 + 600 f4 IS + 2x Kenko TC, f7.1, 1/200 sec, ISO 2000, Tripod-Gimbal support, remote shutter, manual exposure in available light, 12.6m f5.6, 1/500 sec, ISO 800, 10.1m f6.3, 1/80 sec, ISO 800, re-sized FF, 8.93m

Wow!! Awesome captures!! Ka Mastah, as always!! amazing how you framed the last PD. These birds are fast and yet you were able to locate it, focus, pan and center the bird in the frame and squeeze at the right moment when the bird is perpendicular to your line of sight - with a 560mm lens!! oh plus the crop factor of the body.

Hi Sylvia, Whoa! It is huge. However, it is not the Attacus Atlas, which like Neon, I thought it was. It is the Attacus lorquiini. I sent Gan, my moth nut friend in Singapore, this link and this is his comment: "That is a lovely moth. There are 4 species of Attacas in Philippines and the one posted in the forum is not Atlas moth (Attacas atlas) but a close relative, Attacus lorquiini. Attacas atlas has 2 transparent windows on the forewings while this one has only 1."Now, now, please take note that the moth of the Philippines are understudied. You have reached so many places and for sure you have stayed late at night and have seen lots of them... perhaps we can start a moth photo data base. I have started with butterflies, and still need more. Thanks for sharing, Syl. It is very encouraging at a time when I am on a standstill with my butterfly project. telyds >;< Wow!! 4 species, in the Philippines, of this giant moth !! all the while I thought there is just one species. So I guess this is the montane species and the A. altas is the lowland the other 2??? Really under studied!! But it's still a male though, I got that one right.

I sort of didn't want to open the forum again, yet I could not resist, now I'm depressed... I knew it!! Great captures once again Tonji!! ;D That Luzon-bush warbler is a hard one to get, I only got blurred captures of it cause as you said they only come out when the sun hasn't risen yet. Nice SFM!! It's really a struggle to get the whites exposed properly on this bird and you got it spot on.

Been going through my previous sorties through the Mt. Province and saw this warbler capture that I got from Mt. Polis. Don't have any reference with me so didn't hazard a probable ID. A very blurred dorsal view if it's of any help.

Wow!! both photos have excellent exposures, I guess this are full framers you posted? you have still a wide margin for cropping and composition, you'll learn this as you go and by just looking at the post of the other members. Hope to see you sometime if I get the chance to visit Makiling again.
