Haven't posted a photo in this forum for quite a while. Wasn't able to a lot of sorties last year due to health problems and for some reason lost the drive to go out birding But some how I think I'm back on track and will be able to do what I love again. To break the ice, a "lifer" for 2015, woohooo! Thanks to Fr. Auckhs for accommodating us on a short notice to go visit the Letran Campus in Abucay, Bataan. Now, how to attache photos again? After trying several times with no luck, went to google and finally got it Green-faced Parrotfinch ( Erythrura viridifacies) 5DM3 + 600 f4 IS + 2x Kenko TC, f4.5(9), 1/640 sec, ISO 4000, Tripod-Gimbal support, natural light.

I was presented here with a dilemma whether to shoot with a slower shutter speed and a lower ISO, which will give lower noise or shoot with just the right shutter speed to freeze the bird which will produce a higher ISO shot. Considering my gear setup the highest shutter speed I could get that could handle the mirror slap of the 5DM3 + 600 f4 + 2x Kenko TC on a tripod would be around 1/80 to 1/100 sec. Since this is a rare bird and I wanted to get it right, I chose the later which gave me an ISO 20000. The name compliments the bird as it remained below the dark recesses of the forest stream. I would have taken the TC off if not for the intermittent rain that afternoon and I didn't carry the lens holder as well :-). Thanks to Pete Simpson who described the general location in detail that was easy for me to locate and Tonji for confirming. Need the help of a friend to reassure me that I was at the right location when in the first several minutes I didn't see the bird :-). Cryptic Flycatcher (Ficedula crypta)- Eden Nature Resort, Toril, Davao City, April 4, 2014 Ixi & Carmela, I know exactly what you went through. I was waiting there looking at the rocks and on dark recesses along the vegetation when suddenly I felt something was watching me and turned my head slowly to the right side where the stairs were still going down. I was eye to eye with the bird and was praying that it continue to be curious at what I'm doing :-) Turned my camera slowly, adjusted for a lower ISO, turned MLU, used the remote shutter and fired away. f4, 1/60sec, ISO 8000

Wow! great captures Ramon! considering the distance and the environmental conditions, how was the setup on the view point? was there any blinds to conceal your movements? Looks like this is a very accessible area and photogs and bird watchers would try to access the area just to get a glimpse.

Wow! finally a wild photo of this duck! Wished I'd have the time to go around like you do, Tonji. Great capture as always, controlling the exposure on the light parts of the bird.

Wow! You really got this close that parts of the birds were outside the frame, Doc William! Great capture and excellent exposure showing details on the white feathers that usually easily gets blown.

I was packing my bags last Nov. 4 to go back to prison, but the birding bug wouldn't let my mind settle and get resigned that I won't be able to bird anymore on my departure date. Instead of my work clothes I packed my camera gear and headed towards LMEP instead of the airport . I said to myself that I would be happy just to get a glimpse of the now famous IBKF pair. It was good that I went, otherwise I would have rolled in my bed and would have lost several days of sleep imagining how I would stalked and have taken the "shot". Indigo-banded Kingfisher ( Ceyx cyanopectus) - Male All shot with a 5DM3 + 300 2.8 IS V1 + 2x TC V1 on Tripod-Gimbal support. f5.6, 1/100 sec, ISO 2500, Tv priority +1 EV f5.6, 1/100 sec, ISO 6400, Tv priority +2/3 EV When the IBKF is on a water level perch, it stands tall. f5.6, 1/100 sec, ISO 3200, Tv priority +1/3 EV
