The day after Tonji and Sylvia Ramos' group visited Polillo Island, our group of birders arrived at Polillo at the invitation of local birder and conservation officer, Bob Natural, who alerted the entire Philippine birding community about the easy sightings of the rare PHILIPPINE DWARF KINGFISHER (Ceyx melanurus). An uncommon endemic and the tiniest forest kingfisher in the Philippines. This is the melanurus subspecies of Polillo and Luzon. Taken in Polillo Island, Quezon on 7/28-29/13. This was an exciting LIFER for me! A pair of PDKFs was nesting on a vertical streambank and perched regularly on the vines in front of their nesting hole. We set up our hides so as not to stress them. The first day was dreary and rainy, and the lighting was not optimal. Canon 1DX camera, 600 mm lens, tripod. F/4, ISO-1600, 1/30 second. F/4, ISO-3200, 1/100 second. Here is the nesting hole, which is about 1 foot below the top of the slope and 2-3 feet above the water. On the second day, the sun came out a little bit. F/4, ISO-1600, 1/125 second. F/4, ISO-1600, 1/125 second. About 200 meters up the stream, I chanced upon this PDKF that had caught a lizard for breakfast. This may have been a different PDKF from the nesting pair. Taken from 13 meters away in poor lighting. What a great birding adventure! Thank you, Bob Natural.

Last May, I visited Kaeng Krachan National Park, Thailand with Singapore birder Micky Lim. This is a beautiful cloud forest that is well-protected and well-maintained by the Thai park service, with awesome, easy birding where I got more than 20 lifers. The Philippines can certainly learn from Thailand. I captured 3 out the 5 Broadbills in KKC. Canon 1DX camera, 600 mm lens, tripod. SILVER-BREASTED BROADBILL (Serilophus lunatus) - Male. Taken in KKC on 5/5/13. F/8, ISO-1600, 1/100 second. BLACK-AND-RED BROADBILL (Cymbirhynchus macrorhynchus) Taken in KKC on 5/6/13. 1.4x TC, 840 mm, F/5.6, ISO-800, 1/125 second. DUSKY BROADBILL (Corydon sumatranus) Taken in KKC on 5/6/13. 1.4 x TC, 840 mm, F/5.6, ISO-800, 1/160 second.

Thanks, Ely. There is no question that a hide allows one to get much closer to birds, for better photos.

Thanks, Ely. I was wondering if this RBP was a female, because the feathers are not as bright as expected.

HOODED PITTA (Pitta sordida) Resident. This is presumably the sordida subspecies endemic to most of the Philippines except Palawan. Taken in La Mesa EcoPark on 6/10/13. Canon 1DX camera, 600 mm lens, tripod, hide. F/4, ISO-3200, 1/125 second. F/5, ISO-3200, 1/100 second. F/5, ISO-3200, 1/125 second. F/5, ISO-3200, 1/125 second. For comparison is the Hooded Pitta in Thailand. Note that the crown is brown instead of black. Taken by JJ Quisumbing in Kaeng Krachan National Park, Thailand on 5/5/13. Canon 1D Mark IV camera, 300 mm lens, 1.4x TC, handheld. 420 mm, F/4, ISO-2000, 1/125 second.

PHILIPPINE TAILORBIRD (Orthotomus castaneiceps) Endemic. This is presumably the rabori subspecies of Negros and Cebu. Taken in Twin Lakes, Sibulan, Negros Oriental on 6/13/13. Unlike the chloronotus subspecies of Luzon which has a yellowish green back, the rabori subspecies has a gray back. This is a subspecies LIFER for me Canon 1DX camera, 600 mm lens, tripod. F/4, ISO-4000, 1/400 second. F/4, ISO-1600, 1/1250 second. For comparison is the frontalis subspecies of the Philippine Tailorbird, which has been split off as the Rufous-Fronted Tailorbird. Taken in Bislig, Surigao del Sur in March 2013. Canon 1DX camera, 800 mm lens, tripod. F/6.3, ISO-3200, 1/1250 second.
