This is the the tiniest of the Philippine kingfishers. It's also speedy, described in the Kennedy guide as darting "invisibly from perch to perch" and is usually found in the forest. So when Bob Natural of Polillo Islands Biodiversity Conservation Foundation, Inc. reported great views in an accessible site, we quickly invited ourselves to Polillo Island! This was a great opportunity to see a long-time target bird of ours! Philippine Dwarf Kingfisher Ceyx melanurus27 July 2013, Polillo Island f 6.3, iso 1250, 1/25 f 6.3, iso 1600, 1/60 f 6.3, iso 1600, 1/25 Gear: Canon 500 mm v2 + 5DMk3 + 1.4 tc v3

Great capture, Sylvia. Light must be very low at 1/25 at ISO1600.

Woohoo, excellent captures in all, Sylvia! considering the lighting conditions, wish I was there to get a replacement photo for the files of this bird I lost from a HDD crash.

Thank you for the comments!
I was struggling with the low light shooting conditions. On the first day, Tonji, Mike and Clemn already nailed their shots while my shots had very little detail. I was crossing my fingers and knocking on wood that it would show up again the next day! Then I copied their technique! Haha! I think my main problem the first day was too high iso (2500) plus my tripod wasn't steady enough and I was probably also too excited and jittery!
And, if you haven't yet, check out the PBPF Facebook group for other pics and trip details!
Neon -- I remember your Philippine Dwarf post!

Nice set of pictures Sylvia. It seems that the bird in the first picture is bigger than that of the second picture. Is this the same bird or is one male and the other female?

Thank you Ely! Those are all the same bird. In the second pic, it looks thin because I caught it at mid head-bob. It was doing that head bobbing thing where it moves its head up and down, like the one in the video of Bob Natural.
