Great pics with a swaro scope. It's three times harder to take a good digiscope shot than one with an SLR and an L lens. I understand he difficulty, these are superb.

Very detailed pics of the immature trogon Ely. I can see what looks like a fly in the middle of it's back.
Looks like the lighting was difficult based on your settings. ISO 2500 and 6400. The 1dmk4 can do amazing things with very little light.
It's great to see an addition to the family. I wonder if these is the same pair JP and Martin photographed a while back.

Sylvia and I have been helping out WBCP by doing some bird lists/reports for some places that have asked to have their birds counted and identified. Its more of a speed birding thing than a photo session. We went to Orchard golf earlier in the week then went to Caliraya yesterday and stayed overnight to count and ID the birds in the golf course there. It was binoculars and scope more than cameras this week. But I was able to take this Oriental/ Richard's Pipit this morning before 6:00am. It was quite cool in Caliraya this morning. This bird seemed to be cold because usually the Richard's Pipit stands up with the neck fully extended. I really liked the light and the setting of the bird so I handheld my camera and snuck close for a few shots. It is a wonderful artistic shot.
The soft warm light of dawn breaking is what makes us birdnuts wake up before the roosters. Its a short window of time for us to take something special, unusual and hopefully striking. Bravo.

Great pose. It was doing the lying down sleepy pose when we saw it. Great to see the white on the bottom of the tail and the nostril detail.

Hi Ely, thanks for the heads up about what are considered common birds for the contest. I guess it's actually all birds. That makes it fun as well for those who like to travel and go look for special birds. :)Sylvia and I just came back from Subic today and we were in Palay-Palay a few days ago. It cool that we can use these latest pictures as well. It's kinda funny calling a Philippine Trogon or a Luzon Bleeding Heart common though... Thanks everyone for the kind comments about my neighborhood birds. I had ignored my neighborhood birds as we enjoyed the excitement of finding new birds in different parts of the country. But my Alabang pictures needed lots of improvement so it's nice to work on some of the birds in our village.

I really like the challenge of the contest for this period. Common birds. It gives me a chance to try to improve my technique. I guess common birds don't have the "wow" factor of the unusual birds like a Philippine Trogon or some of the more colorful mountain or forest birds. Presenting a common bird to look special is an interesting task. I also like this topic because its helping me to improve my pictures of Alabang birds, all these pictures were taken in the village. Another plus is that I am learning more about the behavior of the birds in my area. I have posted some pics for the contest, but not these ones. These are some of my attempts for the motif "common birds" of the past few days.
