The whole Philippine Hawk Owl complex changed and there are now so many new splits. Luzon Hawk Owl is one of the splits. But not all the races under Luzon Hawk Owl are found in Luzon. Luzon Hawk Owl is now made up of three subspecies. Ninox philippensis centralis (Bohol, Boracay, Carabao, Guimaras, Negros, Panay, Semirara and Siquijor) Ninox philippensis philippensis (Biliran, Buad, Catanduanes, Leyte, Luzon, Marinduque, Polillo and Samar) Ninox philippensis ticaoensis (Ticao) I got some photos of centralis this summer. I like the lighting on this one. LUZON HAWK-OWLNinox philippensisDumaguete, Negros April 17, 2015 Canon 7dmk2, Canon 600mm f4, 1/10, f 7.1, ISO 2500, tripod

Nice set.
I've been looking at your Sigma photos and they look quite good Bobby.
Some of the Tamron photos I have seen are not so sharp and I have heard reports that people have issues with the autofocus of the Tamron 150-600. They said the Tamron seems to work intermittently, sometimes on but oftentimes it does not work. How is the autofocus on the Sigma?

Thanks Bobby. I wish the birds were all just in one place. It would make photographing them so much easier.

This year we have been photographing a lot of owls. Owls are always the greatest thrill for me. This owl, the Mantanani Scops Owl was taken in Tablas Island, Romblon. There are four races of this species in the Philippines. So far we have only seen and photographed romblonis in Tablas and mantananensis in Palawan. Neon, I think reports are that it was the male that was killed.
Yup, that was pretty tragic. Another case of stupidity.

Thanks Mike. I am sure you will get a great shot when you go back.
Thanks Neon. I can't remember the name of the plant. The bird is standing on the fruit. When the fruit is ripe it kind of pops out a bit. These plants were all over the place.

The birds have been there for a long time. I have been going to that area for several years and they have been there everyday.
The yacht club made some fish pens with tilapia a few years back. But they would break and the fish would escape. The resulting big schools of tilapia has been a blessing for all the Rufous Herons and Little Herons as well as the Egrets and Whiskered Terns. The fishermen outside also catch the tilapia. But I doubt if the fish is healthy to eat.
The water is dirty. There is an open sewer line there. Somedays some really bad chemicals enter the water and there are massive fish kills for a few days.
The Rufous Night Herons seem to roost in Manila Zoo during the day and they would come in during the afternoon. Lately they come in at all times.

Bobby, people can be pretty stupid. I really like Pied Bushchats. I have several around our place and they always are in pairs or family units. Sad for the female indeed. One particular pair is always near us and has been perching in the same place everyday for the past two years. What a waste to be shot by a kid for no reason. This is the male that always hangs out near us.

Thanks Tina you should really go for this bird. Thanks Bobby, our last time it just gave us marginal photos. This time it gave us a good look. Thanks Romy, I am glad it landed on this plant. On the trees it was more difficult to get the right BG and light. This was eye level, so much easier. Thanks Tateo, I hope to see you again soon.

BLACK-BELTED FLOWERPECKERaka Visayan-belted Flowerpecker Dicaeum haematostictumFeb 14, 2015 Bacong, Negros Oriental On our last trip to Negros we wanted to improve our photo of this bird. Thankfully it posed nicely and we got some shots. I forget the name of that plant. The plant was all over which probably explains why the flowerpecker was around. I ate the fruit. Nice not too sweet.
