...I'm back. Been busy. But funny thing, just outside my home office window is a big gum. Many birds come to visit. So why not dust off the old 30D and click off some frames. There are some raptors that circle the bay so I'm hoping to nab a couple for later. Sacred Kingfisher (Lifer!) 30D + 400L - 1/640s f/5.6 at 400.0mm iso800 My perch (squint - it's an iphone pic)

Thanks for the leads Bobby K. I will take it from here... I love the name Subangdaku. I played golf today at Little Bay in Sydney, same concept I guess. CL Chris, Sunstar Cebu, a local daily, runs an extensive classified ads section, and on Sundays, direct sellers also run ads. The second-hand stores are located mostly in the area of Subangdaku Mandaue City and A.S. Fortuna Street, Mandaue City. They have displays that can be seen along the hi-ways or side streets. FYI, I scanned th classifieds, and there are some Hi-lux diesels for sale; no Strada that I can see. The average price is around 550K for such types here. It would be best if you call them directly though. Try: JOSCAR - (032)346-6051 or GATEWAY (032) 5162658 or MAGUIKAY AUTO SALES (032)3436058 and MAC AUTO SALES (032) 344-1451

Thanks Bobby. Don't take too much of your time with this as I probably will not move on it in the next couple of weeks. Would be more useful to know which newspaper you would use? And perhaps which street/area in Cebu has the most dealers... =) Salamat. CL

Been a while since I've been here...
Was wondering if you folks can recommend a reliable secondhand car dealer in Cebu? I am looking for a Diesel Hilux or Strada or something similar.
Any websites? Also, do you normally keep books on servicing in the PI? Should I expect a stamped (I know, rubber stamps) book?
Thanks! CL

I agree with the buffer. I had the choice of buying the 40D instead of the 30D but went for the cheaper option as it was for a backup (700dollar difference was logical choice). Anyway, the 30D has a very small buffer for something that can shoot 5fps. Luckily I only prefer 2-3 frame bursts. I feel the 5fps is overkill. However, the buffer for RAW would be nice.
Let me just take notes...
500mmF4IS 1DMk2N Couple of TCs Gimbal support...
OK, printing now and showing to domestic boss. He he. She'll have to agree since someone other than me 'created' the list. =)

...have you considered say a 1d 'S' Mk3 for the pixel crop factor and rely on the shorter lenses? It seems a tempting way to go for portability.

I guess where I shoot is normally a wetland situation so anchoring myself is not such a bad proposition. Most BIFs in wetlands seem to be the larger birds anyway as the 30D will have to get some workhorse use for at least another year.
Do you have the 1D mated to the 400L on your shoulder while the 40D on the tripod with the larger lens? Or the other way around?

OK, so I am on the verge of jumping into the fire with this thing.
I guess I wanted to hear some more pros and cons to this lens.
Is this strictly an anchored(stay on support) lens?
Focusing for BIF with a 30D... possible? Do you handhold? Can you successfully BIF with this anchored to support? Can I get away with a ballhead?
Any other comments?
My bodies are a 30D (which used to be the backup until I started birding) and 5D. I have the excellent 400mm5.6. All my other L's are too short!
I guess if I acquire the 500 I might need another crop body or 1 series so I have the 400handy around my neck/shoulder and the anchored 500...
Anyway back to the 500.

As we see most of the time, the Heron is normally very elegant and nicely neat in appearance. =) Quite funny to see a disheveled one. One of the things that I like about photographing birds is the humour we can find in behaviour. Doesn't need to be serious all the time!

The Pukeko was on a rise so I didn't have to be on my belly. I have to say that these are pretty 'common' in Sydney as I start to travel with eyes wide open for birds. I do find the colours quite vibrant and the 'head shield' makes it look pre-historic. The floating blind pays of once more! Nice JP! Chris, were you lying prone on the ground to get your shot? Lots of detail!

Nice one JP! I was about to post my Pukeko also... I'll add it to your thread instead. These guys are quite funny in that they tend to chase each other around. Your grass looks wilder than mine though! Although really cool to see birds from around the world in one spot.

Nice one Romy and Pogi!
Romy there are age brackets for the BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year - 10yrs and under, 11-14 and 15-17. I saw the travelling exhibition this year and the entries from the young ones were excellent. Perhaps we are seeing a future entrant.

Nice one Romy.
I am heartened to know you do crop. Producing images of 'printable' quality is certainly almost a lost art. Most images are posted online and not many know about resolution much less colour balance when transfered to a tangible medium. I hate to say it but it is much simpler posting an 800pixel wide/high image that looks great online/on-screen but may not print well beyond 4x6. An antique dilemma for those of us wanting to liberate images onto paper.
