2nd Post Cinnamon Bittern (Ixobrychus cinnamomeus) UP Diliman Campus, 12:40 pm, October 19, 2008 Canon EOS 450D, EF-S55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS A very funny bird to photograph.. initially pretended to be a twig .. ;D ... on a dominantly green leafed mango tree .. it moved really slow .. till it had its back at me to fly away .. .. gave me the laughs ... initially i thought this to be a Purple Heron .. because of the purple thing at the tail .. .. and also ..so far, the bitterns i've seen on campus had some stripes ... 1/125 sec, F5.6, 250mm, ISO400, Flash Fired, DPP 3.4, GIMP 1/250 sec, F5.6, 250mm, ISO400, No Flash, DPP 3.4, GIMP White Throated Kingfisher (Halcyon smyrnensis) UP Diliman Campus, 8:38 am, October 5, 2008 Canon EOS 450D, EF-S55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS 1/800 sec, F11.0, ISO400, 250mm, DPP 3.4, GIMP

Nice catch Julius, good job on the flash as well. ID is right but it's a female, the male has a black wing tip. Here's a reference photo of the Male - Yellow Bittern.

Attention Jules and Neon, notice the white streak along the cheek of the bird, I think this indicates that the bird is not a yellow bittern but a cinnamon bittern. Besides, think the color is more on the cinnamon than yellow. Finally, adult yellow bitterns have black or grayish crowns.

Tried My luck yesterday if the SWKF that Doc Mando saw would show itself to me. I was unlucky but when I decided to checkout Hardin on the way home I was fortunate to get a Male Common Kingfisher (Alcedo atthis). This is my first shot of the Male 40D + 600 mm f4 IS, f5.6, 1/125 sec, ISO 400, Manual Exposure, Raw Capture in available light, Manfrotto 055PROB - 393 Gimbal Head support.

Congratulations Jun! WOW!! I just missed this one!! Hopefully when I get paroled this owl is still there and on a natural perch not on fan. Propjerry, is there another Jun O. in UP? The Jun O. I know is Jun Obille. Anyway, Congrats on the find Jun O.!!

Correction! Neon is correct to point out that it should be Jun Obille, not Jun Orilles. I am very sorry Jun for the error, my mistake.

Here is my own version of possibly the same owl. It showed itself today at the National Physics Institute. Thanks to Doc Mando, I have been able finally get to shoot it, albeit under unfortunate conditions. I am posting the exif later.

i would like to add a close up of the shot of the physics owl at upd. So this is the natural color of this bird!! All the while I thought it was gray, from the other pics I've seen of this bird, it's brown after all. Thanks Doc Mando!! Great "in your face" shot of this bird.

I was at UP yesterday for the launching of the Sarzuela Festival. I noticed that the Saraca trees are in full bloom around the Administration building. I took a couple of shots and quickly changed lens when I saw the good looking man in front of the Admin. building. I found myself birdwatching with delight. There were about a dozen ETS + 1.

This may seem silly to most, but I have an honest question from somebody who has already gotten lost in UP quite a number of times already.
I tried to find the UP lagoon, but was unsuccessful (yet again). even bought a map and I still could not find the main library. Does it go by another name? How does one get there? Any land marks?

When you are entering the Campus from the University Avenue the building at the end of this road is the University Administration building where you find the famous Oblation statue. Behind this building is an open space, you will find the ampit-theater and further up would be the Lagoon. The other building in this wide space in the middle of the university oval would be the Main "Lib" library building. You won't miss this as this is the only building there next to the "sunken" garden ( big open ground for playing field games and holding fairs).
