It's nice to be back here. My church Higher Rock had a three-day retreat in Jabez Campsite, Pala-pala, Dasmariñas, Cavite that started last January 5 up to January 7. Last year, the youth ministry went there for a camp and they saw an Indigo-Banded Kingfisher. Unfortunately, it accidentally went to the electric fan and it died because of the impact. I just saw the photo of the dead bird. I planned of seeing the bird alive so I brought my birding gear. I didn’t see the endemic kingfisher but I saw another lifer instead. I saw a White-Breasted Waterhen. Further, I was able to see a family. A saw the pair and then I saw four young chicks. I wasn’t able to photograph the waterhen family because I’m observing from a perilous spot. The waterhen lives in a creek, which is two to three meters below where I’m standing. Nevertheless, I enjoyed what I saw. I never ventured going nearer where the nest is because I discerned that the parents seems to have sense my presence, even though I’m quite a distance away and I’m camouflaging behind trees and shrubs. The creek wasn’t a pleasant place to bird because it really stinks because it serves as the piggery sewerage of someone somewhere. But then for the sake of observing a bird in its natural habitat, the foul odor has to be tolerated. White-Breasted Waterhen Manual, 500mm, f/7.1, 1/100 sec., ISO-560, handheld Manual, 500mm, f/7.1, 1/100 sec., ISO-560, handheld

hello, guys!
it's been awhile since i last visited the forum and posted something here.
i'm going to mt. pulag coming december 18-19. is there any chance of seeing birds there? if there are, how should i gear up? i'm just thinking of bringing my wide lens and enjoy the view, plus bring my bins just to observe the birds.
thanks!

Here’s another video I took. This time it’s a Spotted Wood Kingfisher in Negros Oriental. It’s grainy because my camera’s sensor is not too good in low light conditions.

Are they making a nest? Nice video Mark. Keep it up. thank you, kuya ely! glad you liked it. we were thinking then that they were making a nest but then after several days of hard work, these woodpeckers just left it. i don't know why. i stopped taking pictures and videos for the reasons that i was already content with my shots and i got anxious that i'm might be getting too close and disturb them. but then after a few days, observing from a distance, the birds didn't come back.

I took videos of the Philippine Pygmy Woodpecker in our backyard months ago. I have no video editing tool other than than Windows Movie Maker. I tried to edit the videos using this software but the 16:9 aspect ratio was distorted.
Then Nikon released a free software called View NX2. It has a movie editor that retains the 16:9 aspect ratio. This is just my simple attempt with bird videography and video editing.

NZ's conservation effort is really admirable. indeed a greed seagull! and interesting local name for a shelduck. it would have sounded like a curse here in the philippines.
