The afternoon light was golden this weekend. This encouraged me to do some quickie birding in the fields of nearby Bacsil, Bacnotan, La Union. Thanks, TeLyds, Ely, Michael and Bob! I just did an 11"x14" test print of the first shot posted and it turned out not so bad (the laptop's screen is uncalibrated).

I always like to view your photos, Romy. Very nice capture as usual. Thanks, Tateo-san! "If there was no 1.4x TC, I'd have to get closer to improve the IQ, Ely." Thank you Romy. How far were you from the bird? Ely, here are the distances..... as you can see from the first shot, even 700 mm on a 7D was barely long enough. I would have gotten less detail if the 1.4x was removed, or my 1D4 was mounted instead of the 7D. I was shooting from my vehicle and I couldn't get any nearer. Uncropped full frame, 9.34 m Near full frame, 10.10 m

Thanks, Ely and Ramon! I have one question would the image quality be any better if there was no TC? If there was no 1.4x TC, I'd have to get closer to improve the IQ, Ely.

I was trekking along the banks of Bued River (a river that snakes from the Cordillera mountains down to La Union) this afternoon when I saw these pretty, little birds. This turned out to be my closest encounter yet with this species. Thanks everybody for the kind comments! Cool. Wow, that duck is nice. Great afternoon golden light on the bee eater. Too bad we did not meet up. We were too sleepy to stay longer. Light was very sweet, though not much action in the afternoon, Tonji. There's still a lot of water all over the wetlands, so the birds are everywhere and not yet concentrated in the big pond.

I was driving from La Union to Manila yesterday , and noticed that the skies were cloud-free. I thought it was a good time to do a short birding side-trip to Candaba, as I haven't visited the place for nearly two years. Thanks to Tonji R. for confirming that the access road is now passable. Here are a few of the Candaba regulars. Blue-tailed Bee-eater ( Merops philippinus) Shooting Info - Candaba wetlands, Pampanga, Philippines, November 18, 2012, 7D + 500 f4 IS + Canon 1.4x TC II, 700 mm, f/7.1, ISO 400, 1/400 sec, bean bag, manual exposure in available light. Dear fellow birdnuts, To those interested to try capturing a spaceship with their birding gear, the ISS will make an overhead pass over Manila early this evening. If the skies are cloud-free, this is among the best opportunities to catch the space bird over Manila in a long time. Pass Details courtesy of www.heavens-above.com: Some ISS capture tips:1. It's important to synch your timepiece with the standard time, otherwise you might miss the pass. A good website to sync time is www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/city.html?n=145. 2. Use the longest lens you have, plus all the TCs you can stack. 3. Manually pre-focus on the moon or any heavenly body. 4. Shoot in bursts, with IS on if equipped. 5. Don't hesitate to use high ISOs for faster shutter speeds, it's easy to filter the noise later during PP. Here's a sample capture at ISO 3200 way back in April 2011. Happy space birding!!! ;D ;D

Thanks, Ramon, Ely, Michael, Ariel and Tirso! This one was trying to feed on the next Munia generation. It chased away the Munias, so it became my subject instead. I got it just as it started to rain (raindrops are visible in front and at the back of the bird), and the predator looked up the sky possibly to check out the rainclouds. Brown Shrike ( Lanius cristatus, migrant) Shooting Info - Paranaque City, Philippines, October 2, 2012, 7D + 500 f4 IS + Canon 1.4x TC II, 700 mm, f/6.3, ISO 800, 1/320 sec, hand held, manual exposure in available light, uncropped full frame resized to 1500x1000.

I chanced upon this adult bird feeding an immature with grass seeds at the vacant lot beside our house in Paranaque yesterday. Light was flat due to the overcast skies, but the noise made by the immature as it begged its parent for food was enough provocation for me to take out my birding gear from its bag. Scaly-Breasted Munia ( Lonchura punctulata, adult and immature) Shooting info - Paranaque City, Philippines, September 30, 2012, 7D + 500 f4 L IS + 1.4x TC II, 700 mm, f/5.6, ISO 400, 1/640 sec, manual exposure in available light, hand held, near full frame resized to 1500x1000.
