I went to the mountainous eastern fringes of San Fernando City (La Union) this August 31, 2012, to inspect some concreting projects as part of my day job. I decided to bring some birding gear in the vehicle just in case I cross paths with an interesting avian subject to photograph. True enough, a perched Oriental Honeybuzzard loomed into view as I drove down Bacsil Ridge (site of a famous battle at the end of WWII). I came across the bird at mid-day, but the slightly overcast skies helped tame the harsh shadows. This could be the first record of this raptor species in this city, and even perhaps in the province of La Union. Oriental Honeybuzzard ( Pernis ptilorhynchus philippensis, endemic race) Shooting Info - Bacsil Ridge, San Fernando, La Union, Philippines, August 31, 2012, Canon 1D MIV + EF 500 f4 IS + 1.4x TC II, 700 mm, f/7.1, ISO 400, 1/1000 sec, bean bag, manual exposure in available light. Will add more images and HD video later. ;D

Thanks, Ramon and Dennis! I was positioned a bit higher than the raptor, hence I was able to get out-of-focus terrestial backgrounds, instead of the boring sky. Here's a newly processed one, this time with the 7D and 2x TC. Shooting Info - Bacsil Ridge, San Fernando, La Union, Philippines, August 31, 2012, Canon 7D + EF 500 f4 IS + 2x TC II, 1000 mm, f/10, ISO 400, 1/250 sec, 475B/516 support, manual exposure in available light.

I ask the same question all the time.. why do they show up whenever you are around.. and they follow you where ever you are! Great ultimate image of this bird only from the ultimate master! Truly inspiring.

The return of the prodigal son is a very nice parable and has a lot of meaning. It is obvious that your type of photography is missed by a lot of our members. There is only one Romy Ocon and you have made it clear by this beautiful capture of the Oriental Honeybuzzard. Well done Romy & Mabuhay.

Thanks fellow birdnuts for your heart-warming comments! <blush> I wasn't able to process the HD video yet, but here's probably my favorite of the stills. I'm happy that it's an uncropped full frame (not a single pixel was thrown away), the raptor's eye is looking skyward complete with catchlight, and of course the terrestial background. Shooting Info - Bacsil Ridge, San Fernando, La Union, Philippines, August 31, 2012, Canon 7D + EF 500 f4 IS + 2x TC II, 1000 mm, f/10, ISO 400, 1/250 sec, 475B/516 support, manual exposure in available light, uncropped full frame resized to 1500x1000.

The birds definitely find it an honor to pose for you, Mastah! You were able to change camera bodies and even take a video and the Honeybuzzard just sat there! Need I say more about the quality of the photos? These are the standards by which other bird photographs are judged - and ours all fall short.

Romy, I enjoyed your video. Even the Philippine Falconet in your avatar was bobbing its head in rhythm with the drumbeat! Hahaha!

My heart was beating in unison with the drums while marveling at the beauty of this raptor. I think the bird even knew the music that you were going to use coz there was one instance that it seemed to get shaken by the beat of the drums ;-D
Excellent as always IDOL Romy !!!
