I was trekking along the banks of Bued River (a river that snakes from the Cordillera mountains down to La Union) this afternoon when I saw these pretty, little birds. This turned out to be my closest encounter yet with this species. Java Sparrow ( Padda oryzivora) Shooting Info - Bued River, Rosario, La Union, January 10, 2013, Canon 7D + EF 500 f4 L IS + EF 1.4x II, 700 mm, f/7.1, ISO 400, 1/400 sec, bean bag, uncropped full frame resized to 1500x1000.

You got the shots that every bird photographer would like to have. To get this 5 1/2 inch bird almost full frame, you must have been close to the minimum focussing distance of 4.5 meters. To be able to see the cornea and pupil of the eye, it has to be the best shot. Well done Romy & Mabuhay. I have one question would the image quality be any better if there was no TC?

Thanks, Ely and Ramon! I have one question would the image quality be any better if there was no TC? If there was no 1.4x TC, I'd have to get closer to improve the IQ, Ely.

How far were you from the bird? Ely, here are the distances..... as you can see from the first shot, even 700 mm on a 7D was barely long enough. I would have gotten less detail if the 1.4x was removed, or my 1D4 was mounted instead of the 7D. I was shooting from my vehicle and I couldn't get any nearer. Uncropped full frame, 9.34 m Near full frame, 10.10 m

I can appreciate the beauty of the birds very easily. Thank you Romy and Congratulations for a job well done.

Thanks, TeLyds, Ely, Michael and Bob! I just did an 11"x14" test print of the first shot posted and it turned out not so bad (the laptop's screen is uncalibrated).

Whenever I see these birds, reminds me of my youthful years in a barrio in Pangasinan. We called them "bilit tsina." Beauty ang mga photos, sir.
