I visited the swampy field near San Juan town proper (La Union) this weekend, and I was pleasantly surprised to see a Pond-Heron in the area. It's virtually impossible to differentiate from afar a Chinese Pond-Heron from a Javan Pond-Heron when in non-breeding plumage. Whatever it is, this could just be the first record of a Pond-Heron species in my home province.
Here's a couple of record shots from my first birding sortie in a long while:
Shooting info - San Juan, La Union, Philippines, January 26, 2014, Canon 7D + EF 400 2.8 IS + EF 1.4x TC II, 560 mm, ISO 400, f/5.6, 1/1600 sec, manual exposure in available light, 475B/516 support, major crop.

It will be great to find out what this is when it goes into breeding plumage! My guess is it's a Chinese!

As they would say in the vernacular: Walang Kupas. Great BIF shots. Well done Romy & Mabuhay.

Thanks everyone! It will be great to find out what this is when it goes into breeding plumage! My guess is it's a Chinese! My guess is also Chinese, Sylvia. Rob H. also thinks it's not Javan. I'll keep an eye on it till April or May, I hope it stays around till it sports a breeding plumage.

In Birds of South East Asia by Craig Robson it says Chinese Pond Heron in non-breeding plumage often have dusky tips to primaries.

In Birds of South East Asia by Craig Robson it says Chinese Pond Heron in non-breeding plumage often have dusky tips to primaries.
Looks like many circumstantial evidence point to a Chinese ID. Rob Hutchinson says that the "well defined breast streaking" of the bird makes it "look like Chinese rather than Javan."
Here's another view of the bird showing top wing detail, including the dusky tips to primaries.
Shooting info - San Juan, La Union, Philippines, January 26, 2014, Canon 7D + EF 400 2.8 IS + EF 1.4x TC II, 560 mm, ISO 400, f/5.6, 1/1600 sec, manual exposure in available light, 475B/516 support, major crop.
And here's the uncropped full frame showing how heavy the cropping was.
