Dear members I'm trying to encourage my partners family to appreciate the birdlife that exists in their local area, (Southern Cebu). On previous visits ive taken my bird guide book to show the children - where we had a lot of fun identifying the local 'Visayan' names for the birds. I thought a good idea would be to plant some fruiting trees that grow naturally in the Philippines,(not necessarily for human consumption) which provide a food source for birds. Any info on such trees would be much appreciated

Hi Bruce, Welcome to the forum. In addition to the book: There are several indigenous trees/plant resources available in the locality. In fact, we are very lucky because there are people and organizations there who are deeply involve in this type of activities in Cebu. A fellow PBPF forum member (Raul R.) is also very passionate about native trees and plants. We have the Cebu Biodiversity Conservation Foundation (CBCF), Ramon Aboitiz Foundation and other organizations who are equally committed to help. Let's sit down (over coffee or tea) if you are free and explore what we can do. PM sent. Thanks. I came away from the meeting really quite positive that with their support things can be achieved. I was very impressed with their overall strategy and agree with you in that in that Cebu is very lucky to have organisations with a committed approach which seems to work. Clearly a lot of people working together to make this happen. Replied to your PM - be great to meet up......

There are very few organizations that I will not hesitate to engage in a personal capacity and RAFI is one of them. Here are some photos of our past activities in the locality: www.pbase.com/philippines/reaching_outI'll be back in Cebu late today and hopefully we can meet this week. Will PM details. Thanks.

Many thanks for replying Sylvia - very useful info & I will aim to source a copy. Incidentally a book has only very recently been published by the Ramon Aboitiz Foindation inc here in Cebu - entitled 'Manual on Native Trees in the Visayas' rafi.org.ph/publications/native-trees/ a very good technical manual.

Thanks for the link Bruce! It looks like a great book. I also found the publications by Forest Restoration Unit (FORRU) in Thailand useful. You can download the entire books for free. It includes reforestation techniques and principles. Here's the site: www.forru.org/FORRUEng_Website/Pages/engpublications.htm
