sorry for the quality of the image but this guy is just too far for my setup. is this a bittern? this is a much larger bird than the more common yellow and cinnamon bitterns. its too shy (anxious) to even show its complete body. is this a grass-owl ? thanks for looking. -mando

Agree with Plain Master on the Grass Owl. The first one looks like an immature Black-crowned Night-Heron. Nice shots, Mando! Ref. (also from Hardin), 40D + Sigmonster (Sigma 300-800 DG) + Canon 2x TC, 1600 mm, manual focus via Live View, resized full frame :
