Good day Birdnuts! I would like to request critiques for this image of a Black-crowned Night-Heron. I am trying out a new body (not brand new, though) and I would like to get your inputs regarding the image quality, noise levels and how to improve this photo. Thanks in advance! Black-crowned Night Heron Canon 40D, 300 mm F4L plus 1.4x TC, hand held, AV, ISO 1600, F6.3, 1/100 at 420 mm. ![](http://www.birdingphilippines.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/IMG_4398.jpg)

I don't see anything really wrong in this pic, Adri. The bokeh is perfect. The only nit I can think of is the slightly overexposed portion on the left side of the heron. But given the lighting condition and the metering was probably made based on the dark body, it is still a very good photo. I'll give this 4 stars out of 5. ;D Truth is the 40D is one of the better mid-level (between the P&S and the high end) cameras produced by Canon. I still have and treasure mine. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

Nice photo. I think if I was testing anything (body/lens) I would use a tripod to discount any possible effects of camera shake esp. with long lenses, oherwise to my mind you are testing not only the gear but your handholding skills also (especially at 1/100). I'm not suggesting there is any camera shake but just the idea of ruling it out as a possibility ... as I said a great shot.
Happy birding.

Hi Adri. If I may: It's a nice clean image at ISO 1600. Good detail and nice pose. Composition wise, I'd probably chop a little from the top and add more room below. I would also open up the shadows (eye, inner side of the wings, lower side of the branch) to show some detail. To my eyes, the background looks a little too clean. Did you apply blurring (apart from noise reduction if any)?

Many thanks for the critiques Bob, Mick and Mark. Bob - the lighting was really terrible, it was almost 5 pm, and just after the rains, so I had no choice but to bump up the ISO Mick - Thanks for the insight Mick, but I did not have my tripod with me when I took the shot. I was just surprised that this night-heron showed up, good thing i have my birding gear with me. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) Mark- Thanks for the composition tip, though I have no more canvas below ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) Maybe I should have switched to portrait mode. I have applied noise reduction in Camera Raw for the background, no blurring was done though. Will try your suggestions on the shadows. Thanks again!
