first time i saw this guy.... looks like a cross between a crake and moorhen but larger than both. is this very shy bird the male greater painted snipe? this was taken in the shadows. had to amp the exposure to get this. a "lovebird" escapee perhaps?

Wow, If I am not mistaken, the first pic could be an immature male watercock?
Second one is correct, a male greater painted snipe
third is an escapee: a budgerigar.
Congrats on the captures.

Yes, Adri is right.
Watercock male painted snipe Budgie
Adri, by the way, I also used to use the term "escapee", then someone more expert than I at that time pointed out to me that the correct term is an "escape". Don't ask me why, but since then I have noticed always in scientific papers only the term "escape" - so, that must be right.

Thank God the watercock is still around. Thank you for your interest in U.P. birds! I have thought it to have been among those captured for food by the squatters in the area . In addition to you, only Adri, Trinket, Master Romy and I have seen this bird so far. Unfortunately, this hunting by squatters happens every now and then. We really need everyone's help here.

propjerry, this is also the first time i saw this fairly large bird here at hardin. i talk to mang amado (the kangkong-farmer), he already forbid anyone hunting/shooting of birds, at least in his area. anyway this summer, i have seen chicks of waterhen, moorhen, barred-rail and even a young night heron and an adult. i hope these sightings are indicative that the fowls are indeed flourishing. since i live at hardin, on my free time i regularly patrol the area. im also talking to the farmers. they declare that they no longer hunt the birds though the munias and tree sparrows are driving them nuts.
