(Admin note - this thread was moved to the ID section from the Photo section as requested by Mando, to confirm the bird's ID. Steve, can you make a positive ID based on the pics? - Romy)______________________________________ I camped out early to ambush this bird. (Thanks to Mam Cel for the heads up). After crouching and staying still for a while (to the point that i could not feel my legs), i was rewarded by these shots. Swinhoe's Snipe (Gallinago megala) 30D + 80-200mm + 2x Kenko TC (400mm), F7.1, 1/250, ISO250, Tripod thanks for looking... -mando

Excellent capture of this snipe species, Mando! I always find it tough to differentiate the Swinhoe's and the Pintail in the field. Here's a snipe capture from Candaba yet unidentified whether Pintail or Swinhoe's.

sir romy, you are right. i too could not tell them apart even extensive web-searches didn't help. sir neon's image in the guide which was also taken at UP tipped the scale, so to speak. hmmm, should have posted this in the bird identification. sir william, yep that is the place. i consistently see this bird around that area in early mornings since last week.

Hi Mando, I understand there's not a sure way of differentiating the Swinhoe's from the Pintail from photos, except if the captures show a lot of tail detail and perhaps some flight shots as well showing pertinent features.
