That's quite a nice problem, Ed... ;D
The 500 vs 600 question is one of the most discussed issues in many photo forums. IMHO, the decision boils down to the shooter's personal style and choice of subjects.
The 600 has longer reach, but heavier and costlier. The 500 is cheaper and lighter, at the expense of reach.
If you're in my situation - shy, small birds, mostly travelling by land - then I'd recommend the 600. But if you plan to travel a lot by air, the 500 is barely at the limits of legal hand carry. That's why I always leave the Sigmonster behind when I fly. So if you can tell us more about what you wish to shoot and where, perhaps the question is more easily answered.
Whatever you choose, please note that you've to provide a good support system for the rig - a gimbal head and a sturdy tripod.
Best solution is to get both (many nature shooters do). ;D

one should also consider the minimum focusing distance of the lens

Oh ED, this is so easy. Get yourself the 500mm, buy an L 300mm from the savings and give it away! There'll be two people happy instead of one - one forever grateful for sure to the grave. Like they say, throw your money to the sea, it will come back to you... the beautiful thing is the payback in terms of photo captured will be more --- Piece of cake, isn't it? In the spirit of the season, the gift goes on. He, he.
Seriously, I see 2 burdens if you get the 600. Heavier and costlier. The produce, you are a good photographer. no need to beat yourself - beat your skill, beat your body, beat your pocket --- heavy pocket? Aaah, there the PBP can help. Guys, Ed needs help unloading. Ahi-hi
Happy New Year, ED. Hope to meet you in 2008 when you come and visit. telyd

Love our forum! We even have voting buttons!
I voted for the 500mm. But that's if I'm buying for myself. I like the idea of being mobile when shooting and I think the 600 will be much heftier. Also, flying would be tough. If you want to extend reach, TCs would be quick solution.

Thanks for all the suggestions, guys. Might go for the shorter one. One more thing, is there a camera shop here in our country where we can rent lenses/tripods for just a week, since here we can rent the 600mm/tripod combo for just 125dollars/day and you if you rent it for a week you can get a discount. Please let me if you know one. A Happy and A Prosperous New Year to You, Guys.

Hi Ed, I don't have personal experience using either 500mm or 600mm. However, I had the opportunity of guiding some photogs in Bohol late last year. The 600mm is HEAVY, look at this scene (photo taken during that trip) and imagine if you can carry that rig in narrow, often slippery trails :-) Happy New Year! Nilo

If you will use the lens extensively for travelling, go with the 500. and a 1.4 extender. That is the combo that 90% of bird photographers I know uses.
