Hi folks, just got my canon 400 prime (F5.6 only) and thinking of what TC to get. I'm leaning on the 1.4X because I'm afraid the 2X's IQ may not be that good but the thought of having 800mm is so appealing to me.
I saw some pics from the 400prime with a 2X and I'm not that impressed with the IQ though I may have misjudged it. I'm also concerned with the smaller apperture if i use the 2X.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks a lot.

Here's a link on how to tape the pins: www.fredmiranda.com/TipsPage/example.htmlThe Kenko Pro DG 1.4x TC has better contrast than the popular, cheapie Tamron 1.4x (which I own). You're right in settling for a 1.4x TC now. Get a 2x TC later when you feel that a 1.4x is still not enough and the IQ at 560 mm is still very good. Romy

I definitely agree with Master Romy. I've had much experience with my Sigma 2X on the 400L Prime, and unless you are within your usual "kill zone" and only want to enlarge your subject, the TC takes a lot away from IQ. On the other hand, using a 2X on, say a Red-Keeled FP just 10 meters away, will result in a much improved photo over one that's cropped to the same size. These were taken with the 400L and 2X Tele on a 400D Body: For starters, go with the 1.4X, then borrow a 2X and see if you can live with it. :-)

Thank you guys for the expert advise. I think I'll be happy with the 1.4X for a long time (i hope)because even without the TC I've been tremendously enjoying the upgrade from my 70-300 IS.
Great photos by the way Sir Bobby, great reason to upgrade to 2X TC someday soon.
