Canon’s patent JPO 2010-145832 is for a 600mm f/5.6 lens:

* Focal distance 582.48
* F number 5.85
* Field angle 2.13
* Image height 21.64
* Whole-length-of-the-lens 346.68

The length of the lens will be 13.65 inches. 1.55 inches shorter than a 500 IS. About equal to the 400 IS and 400 IS II.
The front optical element diameter will be equal to 200/2L IS, 300/2.8L IS, 300/2.8L IS II and the 400/4 DO IS. Lens weight would vary between 1.5-2.5kg.
This would make for a very good hand holdable birds in flight lens. ;D
The question is will this become a product or just a patent to discourage competitors from making a competing lens to Canon's 600 IS II.
