Aside from excitedly trying out if I can start a new thread, I also have a real question.
My 12 yr old daughter's been showing a lot of interest in birds lately (my 15yr old son is still into video games) and I'd like to cultivate that before she discovers boys.
So I'm thinkingg of a pair of cheap binoculars. Since I recently spent all my money on a 40D, my budget is very limited. Can someone recommend a good pair of binocs for birding that is cheap and durable? I was thinking about getting the toy ones in the tiangge but found them too much of a toy. Maybe I can spend up to P3k. Or is that amount too measly that I shouldn't bother for now?

So I always recommend to buy something priced at just about the maximum of one's budget. I'd recommend something like 7x40 to 8x50. The first number is the magnification (7x or 8x). Going beyond 8x makes the view jerky/shaky without IS. The second number is the diameter of the front element in millimeters - the larger this diameter, the brighter is the view. The Nikon Monarch series binos are very well regarded as affordable and decent binos. I believe you can grab one at Hidalgo for PHP 3-5K. Romy

Hello Ding,
The WBCP sells binoculars at about 2K (can't remember exactly how much). The binocs are locally manufactured (in Cebu, I think) for Bushnell, Kenko, etc. The quality is good. In fact, most members use them including my wife.
I'll inquire if there are still stocks available and will let you know.
Best regards, Eric

Hi Ding! I really found it hard looking for bins locally. For your 12-year-old daughter, do consider the weight of the bins. the big ones could be tiring for her. And since you bought yourself a 40D, why not buy your precious daughter a swaro bin. probably the best. hehehe

I'm currently looking for binoculars too. I was quite happy with my Pentax 8 X 24 since the birds in my area are quite used to people and I can go pretty close to them. Now, that I'm learning to identify them, I need stronger lenses. Any recommendations? My brother is hitting Singapore this month. I was thinking of ordering from there. Nikon, Celestron, Eagle Optics, Meade are some brands that I'm considering. Any comments or recommendations are appreciated.

We have a sort of Festival here in Cebu now, and Kenko ( a MEPZA Company) is selling really good binocs for as low as Php 1,450.00 (non-waterproof) or Php 1,650.00 (waterproof)! I bought 3, of course. Very light and modern in design, they have great optics and are warranted for life. These Binocs are export grade and are labeled "Bushnell" "Minolta" or that other brand I forgot.
The sale closes on December 31, 2007. :-)

Bobby, don't they have a website where we can look at the bins available ? I need a small one - something that's easy to bring since I have a lot of stuff around my neck already when we are out in the field. If it's waterproof, much better. Thanks

Looks like there's a potential for our site to maintain an online shop - Cebu binos, Ix! bean bags, Tina vests, etc. Romy

Romy A few months back, I got a 8x42 Nikon Monarch in Singapore. If I knew Romy could get it at his price in Hidalgo, I would've bought it there instead! I'm very happy with them. I've never owned binoculars before so I can't compare, but the objects I focus on seem to have their edges rendered very sharply, making them stand out crisply.

For those wearing eyeglasses, do consider the eye relief of the bins. the longer, the better, so you won't have to take off your glasses when viewing.

I have no scheduled trip just yet, however, I can buy the Binocs for you and you can deposit the refund plus freight charges to my bank account Sir Ding. Please text or call me lang so we can arrange and agree on details. I will take photos of the Binocs I bought and post them here with prices for you to choose from. Give me several hours, as I have some things to finish up first. :-)
