I usually get to see the Ruddy Kingfisher (Halcyon coromanda) and Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher when I go to Coron. But this time I did not get to see the ODK but saw the Blue-eared Kingfisher. It is considered normal if I would see the Kingfisher at a distance of 20 meters or more and sitting under the canopy where its dark. This time I got to see it within 15 meters and in the open. Here are some pictures which were all taken full frame at a distance of 13.1 meters that I would like to share with you. Canon EOS 1D Mark IV, Canon EF 800mm f/5.6L IS USM. Gitzo GT3530LS Tripod, Wimberley WH200 Head. Manual exposure in available light. f/5.6, ISO 1600, 1/400 sec. f/5.6, ISO 1600, 1/320 sec. f/5.6, ISO 1600, 1/250 sec.

It is almost a certainty that you will have lifers in double digits if you bird there for at least 3 days. Its only 40 minutes from Manila by commercial plane. Some of the species that were common like the Hooded Pitta and Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher are not there now. But I saw some new ones like the Emerald Dove and the Blue-headed Racquet-tail were lifers for me. Also seen frequently now is the Blue-eared Kingfisher.

Nice environmental shots of this beautiful bird, Ely. The first is my fave. Thank you Mark. Someone made a remark about the remarkable Tim Fisher's smile that turns his face into a Ruddy color. The first time I met Tim was at the dinner in Intramurous to welcome the delegates for the bird fest last year. He was drinking beer and he had this nice Ruddy complexion. The topic at that time was the Cebu Flowerpecker and Mark Wallbank really got his attention.

Fine-feathered detail of this lovely kingfisher! I like the first photo the most. Thank you Bob. I hope to post by this weekend pictures of the same bird but at a closer distance. Its not that I am learning to get near but the bird seems to be friendlier this time around.
