Hello birdnuts, My 40D's main dial seems to have become loose. When I turn the dial it doesn't make that clicking sound and the shutter speed doesn't change. A few more turning clockwise/counter-clockwise and it gets back to normal, then after a while it becomes loose again. Has anyone had the same problem? What could be the cause? Do I need to send it to Canon for servicing or are there "workarounds" for this? Would appreciate your inputs. Thanks in advance.

Mark, I don't think there's a workaround for this, sounds like a worn out dial to me . I suggest sending it to Canon service soonest, while there might still be spare parts of the 40D available. While there, ask them to do a sensor clean (and dead/hot remapping if you have some) too, as such additional service will be free or won't cost much.

Thanks, Ka Mastah. Will bring it to Canon service then.

For the benefit of other birdnuts who might encounter the same problem in the future, my camera is due for main dial and shutter replacement at the Canon service center in Magallanes. The representative said the two components are connected so they would have to be replaced together. They quoted PHP 1,700.00+ (forgot the actual figure) for the replacement of the two components with a 14-day waiting time. I also left my 400mm for cleaning and calibration.
I'm just hoping sanity won't snap within the 14 days. ;D
