Hi all, I'll be spending a short vacation in the Subic Bay area end of this month. Primarily to sail in the Presidents Cup, but I'll have a couple of days to go birding. Done a search on the net and think that Subic Bay will be wonderful. Still have a couple of questions though. - is a guide necessary? If yes, do you know any? - I have at most two days, what are the best sites? - do i need a permit for entry in hot sites? - any precautions necessary? Like clothing or footwear? Never been birding in the tropics before, babe in the woods Really looking forward to it, with luck we'll try a visit to Mnt Pinatubo as well. Any info on what to take, and where to go will be very much appreciated!! Thanks Nils

Hi Nils, 1. A guide can bring you to birding areas efficiently, considering the spots are kilometers apart. You might need to hire a vehicle within Subic, as there's no public transport that gets near the birding spots. Here's Subic's website with lots of info that you might need: www.subicbay.com.ph/For native guides and info on vehicles for hire, get in touch with Subic's Tourism Office: www.subicbay.com.ph/contact.php2. I'll PM you recommended spots. We don't post location info on the boards because there are hunters/poachers who lurk here. You can ask the guide that you wish to go to these spots. 3. No formal permits needed and if you get a guide from the Tourism Office, you can access most sites. 4. Most birding will be from the roads running through the forest. Just bring some water, snacks and insect-repellant. Remember to reserve some water/snacks for your native guide too....
