I apologize in advance if this has been discussed here previously.
I am looking at the TC options for the canon 300mm F4 IS L, and I am wondering if anyone can recommend a 1.4 X ?
The Canon EF 1.4 X mark 2 seems to be the obvious choice, but I was wondering if there is anything wrong with the old version, the mark 1? Also, are the kenko pro and tamron good options? Or am I just being silly even considering the canon alternatives, do you think?
Thanks so much for your help!

Hi Bindi,
The Canon 1.4x II, Sigma 1.4x and Kenko Pro 1.4x have similar optical performance. If you need weather-sealing, get the Canon.
Otherwise, I recommend the Kenko Pro because it's faster in AF at f/8 when the pins are taped and using a 1.6 CF DSLR. In addition, it matches the IQ of the more expensive TCs, and it's usable with more lenses because its front element is not protruding.

Hi Romy,
Thank you for the information. It is interesting to hear that the AF speed is greater with the Kenko pro when its pins are taped! The kenko is SO very tempting, at such a low a price compared with the canon extender (not to mention its versatility generally).
I have to admit, I am swayed by the weather seal on the canon, and by the pics I've seen of the 300mm F/4 L / canon 1.4X II extender combos. I haven't been able to find many pics made using the kenko yet. I will keep hunting on google though.
You're the best Romy!
