Thanks to JV Noriega I was able to see for the first time the Philippine Hawk-cuckoo which is endemic to the Philippines. Together with JV and Charo Lim we saw the bird a little bit later than expected and so we had the time to have a sandwich and some Tarragon tea. The photographs of this bird really made my day. I am so happy to be able to share them with you. Philippine Hawk-cuckoo (Cuculus pectoralis) Canon EOS 1D Mark IV, EF 800mm f5.6 IS L Lens, Manfrotto 475B Tripod, MF 373 Gimbal Head. All pictures were taken at ISO 800 1/320, f5.6 1/250, f5.6 1/50, f8 1/80, f8 1/80, f8 1.80, f8 1/40, f8 1/40, f8

I am still in AWE with all these captures - is there a word better than excellent? These are excellent x infinity to the max. Bravo !!!!! I have never received two successive replies that are 6 minutes apart. It comes from a person with extensive experience in bird photography. She is well known for her natural way of attracting birds to her and gifted talent of capturing them with her camera. If you recall, I was the person who introduce myself to you early last year in Candaba because Mike Lu told me that you are a very good bird photographer. All I had than was a 70-200mm lens and we were side by side shooting BIF. All the pictures I took that day were deleted as you could hardly recognize the bird. I am so humbled by your generous appreciation of my pictures. Thank you very much Tina for your valued opinion. Mabuhay.

Great set Ely.
It does seem that you took your pictures a little later than we did. The bird was there when we arrived early in the morning. I can see that you had a lot of light during your shoot. The exposure on the bird is spot on for all the pics. Nice. Not easy to do when there is a lot of back lighting especially in picture number 6. Great job on all the exposures!
I also appreciate that its difficult to get the whole bird in focus since its a big bird, the DOF of the big lenses is very thin, and you are shooting at an upward angle. On the last photo it looks super sharp from tail to head. Despite the f8 opening the bokeh is still so nice and creamy. I like it!

Thank you Neon. Welcome back. Any plans of going back to Mount Data? Thanks, Ely, I'm not sure but I want to go back there again as I missed the target Mt. Shrike I was after for 2 consecutive year now. Anyway, it's hard for me to plan way ahead, I usually just go and do it when there's a window of opportunity. ;D

I am impressed with the performance of the 1D Mark IV. The speed and accuracy of the focus is better than what I was using before. The backlight does affect the picture but it still comes out better than my other camera. I would credit the camera with the improve IQ of the pictures. It was almost 8 AM when we first saw the bird.

Truly amazing set Ely, doesn't get any better than this. Big congrats on an excellent work. Thank you very much for your generous appreciation Rey. I am very happy with what I got. But there are times when there is a window of sunlight passing thru the gap in the branches than you would have the opportunity for that picture perfect bird.

So these are what came out of JV's outdoor studio. Oh what a privilege you had, a gracious host and an avian model that was able and willing. I could hear the beating of your heart all the way here in San Juan , and with Tina drumming it... boy, your smile from ear to ear is becoming like that of Neon's. And now I can say to my friends... you know this great bird photographer, Ely Teehankee? We're both members of the WBNPPI. makes us real proud, Ely... keep shooting. Don't stop!!! lyd PS. Why, oh, why did you not have a passion for butterflies and like so many others chose the predator instead?

It is my pleasure to be a member of the Wild Bird & Nature Photographers of the Philippines, Inc. As for the butterflies I don't have time & energy like you to be running after them. The birds are more than enough. Heh heh heh.

Like everyone else said, this set is incredibly beautiful! How close you were from the bird? The last picture is really an eye-popper! Congratulations! Thank you Ariel. I took the last picture in a portrait format as the bird will not fit in the landscape format. He was just 10.8 meters away. After taking some shots it flew away and I showed the pictures to JV. We were both so happy with the way it turned up on the monitor.
