At about 10pm I passed by the northbound lane of the Alabang viaduct towards Makati and spotted cables full of birds (I assume swallows by the silhouette). Are they there for the food (bugs attracted to light off the billboard) or are they just roosting to sleep overnight.
I never noticed them before as whenever I drive by it isn't traffic and my attention is full on forward.
They occupy 3 full segments wide of cable.

They're there every single night .... well most of the time at least. Ate Lyds was the first one who noticed that.
I think they are there for the food. Feasting on the insects that get attracted to the billboards.
One time I was outside Red Kimono at Westgate at around 5:45-6 pm, the swallows or swifts were passing by in waves going to the direction of starmall... as in never-ending flow of swifts wave after wave

How's the food in Red Kimono at Westgate?
A friend speculates that the birds hanging out on the lines are the spirits from the former cemetery that the mall now occupies.

The Ayala Alabang Camera Club was able to get a permit to document the birds we observed perching along the powerlines in front of Starmall Alabang. We will be shooting from on top of the Alabang Viaduct with a PNCC escort. The permit allows anyone who joins to shoot from 5pm Feb 13 to dawn of Feb 14. Interested parties pls list yourself below or msg me privately. Photo below shows the proposed shooting area facing the Starmall.

My Mom is now confined at the Asian Hospital on the 7th Floor where the window of her room has Star Mall framed. I did not bring my bins, but I could see that the swallows are still there, not as much as 2 months back. My siblings and I take turns keeping my Mom company. I will make sure that I have my bins with me... nah, my 300mm is too short. . Actually, I had my 18x Lumix p/s and tried... way too far but you can see the dots of birds up on the lines. Adri mentioned that there are also thousands and thousands of them in SM Fairview, much more than the population in Star Mall, Alabang. One needs a wide angle lens for this or you really just have to stich the frames. lyd

Fredd Ochavo of WBCP posted videos of the swallows in SM North and Star Mall in Facebook. In the Star Mall video, it looked like he was on the ground (not on the viaduct) and the birds looked like black silhouettes only.

From Fredd: "Kindly tell them that if they want an area closer to the birds, they can go to any of the 3 pedestrian overpass in front & on both the sides of the mall. The guards didn't mind me taking a video of the birds. perhaps because i was just using a tiny point-&-shoot cam. I'm not sure if the management of Star Mall will allow those with "bazooka" lens but there's no harm in trying. "
