La Mesa Dam is a beautiful place to see and with the abundance of birds like the Osprey its like a birder's paradise. Thanks to Ding I had the opportunity to take some pictures of this big bird. In between birding, we were eating Banana cake courtesy of Tonji & Sylvia. We had bottomless Tarragon tea as our drink. I also found out that the water that is being treated at the Balara water filtration and treatment plant by the Manila Water is potable to drink from the tap. Sharing with you the pictures that I took. Canon 5DM2, EF 300mm f2.8 L IS USM with Canon Extender 2X II. Monopad Osprey (Pandion haliaetus), ISO 800, 1/640, f5.6 White-breasted Woodswallow, (Artamus leucorynchus), ISO 800, 1/500, f5.6 Osprey, ISO 400, 1/400, f5.6 Pink-necked Green-pigeon, (Treron vernans), ISO 800 1/320, f5.6 Osprey, ISO 800, 1/500, f5.6 Blue-tailed Bee-eater, (Merops philippinus), ISO 400, 1/400, f5.6 I found a picture that I took with the Osprey taking off with a fish on its talons. I saw the wings blurred because of the low shutter speed but I think it is worthwhile to share. ISO 400, 1/400, f5.6

That pigeon is exceptionally sharp! Looks like you mastered monopoding your 300mm. And thanks for the plug, Ely. Le me be redundant for everyone's benefit: Tap water in the Manila Water service area is potable. No need to buy bottled water. You may find more info here: manilawater.com/index.php

I loved the photos! I can imagine that the place is similar to Tarcoles River in Costa Rica wherein people can come closer to the birds and take pictures. I truly like that picture of the colorful pigeon. It's my first time to see a pigeon as colorful as that one. Congratulations, Ely!

That's quite a bounty of beautiful images Ely. Love the colors and the good handling of exposures. Outstanding details on the Pink Neck Pigeon despite its size.

Wow!! Exceptional shots in all, Ely , way to start the new year!! ;D Thank you Neon. By the way I have said it a lot of times before and I say it again now. I have placed some of your excellent pictures in a separate file. From time to time I look at them as my inspiration for they are the kind of pictures that I like to be able to take. I think I still have some catching up to do.

I must say Ely this is a very very good set. It seems you don't even need your favorite 800mm.
You were great company on the boat, providing us with your trademark homemade tea which I will never refuse. Thanks also for the chicken sandwiches.
The eye contact of the Osprey is super. And the pink neck is awesome.
Great job Ely!

That pigeon is exceptionally sharp! Looks like you mastered monopoding your 300mm. Thank you Ding. We were 17.8 meters from the bird. The sky was overcast and if we had the morning sun we would have a lot of better shots. I was using a 2X TC. I think it would have been better if I had use a 1.4X so that the focus will be faster and I think the IQ would be better too. I failed miserably on the BIF as I am not used to a monopod. I think if ever I get another chance I will do the BIF handheld.

Very nice set, Ely..... looks like you were shooting the 300 2.8 IS + 2x TC wide open and the IQ is still very good!

The first time I saw the Pink-necked Green Pigeon was in Pinagbayanan and the bird was more than 50 meters away. This one was 17.8 meters away.

Circumstances such as being in a boat does not allow it and I just have to familiarize myself more with the 300mm.
