Got nothing else to do while waiting for some action in SJ Bats so I started playing around with my 1200 mm rig and see how it will handle BIF shots. It hunts a lot but when you get the subject on the center focus square, AF locks in, but the moment the focusing square misses the target it will hunt again. Here's a big target and looks like it has some potential at BIFs, in an emergency I can use it, no need to take the 2x TC off. ;D 5DM2 + 600 L f4 IS + 2x Kenko TC, f 5.6, 1/1000 sec, ISO 640, Manual exposure, Tripod-Gimbal support. 56.7mWith a single set up I can use it for Video, BIF and stationary birds ;D

Nice combination, Neon! I never thought the 5D2 can take an F/4 lens with a 2X TC and still AF! Amazing :-)

Thanks Edu, I tell you it's not easy to frame BIF with this focal lengths, if I could help it I won't use it, there are more frustrations with miss shots with this setup. If the opportunity presents itself you just have to adapt with what's in your hand. ;D

Excellent partner, that should be a killer length for Candaba birds! The 5D2's clean high ISOs should allow you to stop down to the optically optimum f/11 or so and still maintain 1/1600 sec at ISO 800-1250.

Thanks Ka Mastah!, I was exactly testing it for that, a Candaba sortie pretty soon. ;D I'll try these settings you suggested.

thanks for sharing neon. one thing i enjoy in this forum is getting to see equipment tests like these. i feel like this is how new equipment is tested in F1 cars and later applied to road cars. i wouldn't be surprised if future birding set ups and equipment would be tested in this hallowed playgrounds of the PBPF. this makes formalizing the organization a real good decision!
so, would "a candaba sortie soon" mean this weekend?
let's go!!!

Thanks Gabs, the weekend is too far already. Planning a sortie doesn't work for me most of the time ;D. I "just do it" whenever I find time.
