just bought a used cheapo....

bought it relatively cheap at around $435 from Keeble and Shuchat Photography store in California Avenue, Palo Alto, CA and it is the orange-banded version

i really don't expect too much from this lens after having read through some reviews but my initial takes is that it's holding its own against the 500/f4
positives:
small and light-weight
relatively low price versus its f4 counterpart
exquisitely fine manual focus
1.5m close focusing distance
negatives:
f8, but still good in good sunlight
donut-shaped rings in bokeh for dark spots (because of the mirror design)
manual focus only
no VR, needs a good tripod/monopod
here's a good review of the lens....

here's Bjorn Rorslett's review and i quote...
Reflex-Nikkor 500 mm f/8
(old version) 3 Image sharpness isn't really that bad, but low contrast tends to cut the recorded sharpness on film. For the scenes needing a softer rendition this lens could be a viable alternative, but its light weight makes it quite prone to vibrations and camera shake on any tripod. The camera can rotate at the end of the lens for vertical and horizontal shots.
Reflex-Nikkor 500 mm f/8
(new version) 3.5
The updated 500 Reflex sports a rotating tripod collar, which is quite flimsy and not able to support a heavy camera, and a much improved near limit to 1.5 m. Image contrast is slightly higher than of the old type. Whether or not you'll be able to get sharp results depends entirely on the tripod supporting the lens.
not an impressive rating at 3.5
will post some sample pics later....
