As per Prexy Mike Lu of WBCP, the mayor of Balanga, Bataan, is interested to organize a bird photography contest at Puerto Rivas. I'd imagine that the local government will do this to promote the place as a birding destination and conservation area.
This project can be a good opportunity for PBP members and other local birdshooters to gather together, photograph water birds and help in conservation.
I'm posting this thread so we can solicit reactions/interest from members which we can relay to Mike to help them organize the event.
My main concern on this is: How many PBP members are interested to participate? I'd assume that they will schedule it on a weekend, as most WBCP/PBP members have day jobs/businesses.
Comments, suggestions and expression of interest are welcome.
Romy

As long as the local government will give us unlimited access to all possible (including private lands) birding sites there. Cheers, Neon

This could be a grand EB..... a huge group of PBP shooters, with their long lenses, must be a sight to behold. There'll be more glass there than in the warehouses of Canon and Nikon in Manila.... ;D

Siguro since it is a bird photography contest, suggest to the Mayor na si Ka Romy na lang ang judge. With your expertise, you are disqualified. And op kors you will favor the PBP members and come up with categories that will give short-lens wielding participants a good chance... ahi-hi-hi. joke

I'm in! So long as it's a weekend.
Tip to everyone joing the contest: Tail Tina. She will surely "magnetize" rare birds. Don't worry about her getting pictures better than you would, she won't have any CF card in her camera anyway.

Hi Guys ! Sorry I have been kept so busy with the Club happenings, the hunting issue and the candaba festival ... lagot ako kay Mayor, I have not gotten back to him. I am willing to help organize this event but since I am not a photographer, I should ask Boss Romy to come up with the mechanics. Anyone from the camera clubs here ? Orly Punzalan ?
Mayor was asking if it is doable within the next couple of months since the birds will be leaving soon. I would suggest doing an ocular after the initial meeting with the mayor. Mayor Joet stays at San Lorenzo Village during the weekends so it is easy to get to speak with him. Likewise he is a first-term mayor and only 32 years old, kaya mas eager to try new things.

I'm a bit tied up in some things at the moment.... wondering if there's somebody in the boards who has some free time to help Mike organize the event in behalf of PBP? I'll assist in drafting the photo mechanics, and I'll certainly participate. Romy Hi Guys ! JP to the rescue! Just had a telcon with low-angle specialist JP to ask if he can assist the WBCP in the pre-contest works, and he said he'll help. Mike, please coordinate with JP directly. Arrived at Balanga around 8:30 am yesterday. Met up with Billy, one of the mayor's aid and he brought me to the first site - Puerto Rivas Ibaba - the place has good potential for birdwatching but not for photography. Saw the following species:
- collared kingfisher - black crowned night heron - egrets (not sure of the exact type) - whiskered terns
what's nice about the place is that there's a lot of mangrove plantation surrounding the area but the only setback is when low tide comes, the birds are too far away. construction of a walkway ala triboa in Subic would be nice
Second area was Puerto Rivas itaas which is located behind the town cemetery. among the three sites we went to, this has the most potential for bird photography. according to billy, the area gets thousands of birds when they drain the fishponds around December. Some birds can be seen from the roadside and some around 400m away. Species seen at the location were:
- whiskered tern - egrets - little ringed plover - wood sandpiper - chestnut munia - long tailed shrike
the last stop of my survey yesterday was Tortugas, a small coastal barangay according to my cousins mexican girlfriend, tortugas means "turtle" and i'm assuming there were a lot of them back then. this place has good potential also for photography as the birds were on the coastline. although a few, the distance from the birds was very decent. Species seen were
- brown shrike - egret - little ringed plover - little heron - yellow bittern - long tailed shrike
I personally think that we just missed out on the birds concentrating on the are behind the cemetery. the fish pens were carpeted with sandpipers and plovers according to the mayors' aide. yesterday there were around 500 of sandpipers and plovers mixed together. Novemeber should be marked down in the calendars by the town officials as the best time for birdwatching and photography. It would also help to build elevated walkways to get near the birds.
