For Nikonians out there, here's another reason to whack your brains and piggy banks: www.dpreview.com/news/0907/09073007nikond300s.aspSome differences with the D300: The D300S is a subtle upgrade from the D300; but aside from the obvious addition of video, there are a few other tweaks and additions:
* 720p HD video, including autofocus while recording * SD card slot in addition to existing CF slot * Faster continuous shooting (7fps, vs. 6fps) * Socket for external microphone * Live View and Info buttons * Discrete 'OK' button in multi controller * Interactive settings display screen * Auto and Extra High Active D-Lighting options * Quiet drive mode * Virtual horizon

It has almost become a perfect cam now. I dunno how Nikon can beat this body on future upgrades. should have been a 1080 though. The best addition is the SD card slot. KNowing I had my CF pins pushed the last time rendering the unit inoperable, the SD card should solve those problems. Hope the IQ improves better than D90 too.

I have taken this D300s for a few shots already during the Nikon Club anniversary. For form factor, it is based on the D300 body. But the menus kinda feel more like a D700. Unfortunately there is no HUGE difference to performance (like the D3 to D3x upgrade) that can lure the D90 user to a D300s. Pricing is estimated to be between 70-80K. It uses the same sensor as the D90 so I guess IQ won't be that far.
I agree with Toto, the dual card slot is a great offer.

's' are really not 'x' in Nikon's terms. usually the 's' are mere refresh of the same camera as they have done in the past. 'x' seems to be the sports/speedy version of the same cam. However, this 's' refresh of the D300 is a significant one compared to the ones they have done in the past. It is more of a full upgrade already. If Nikon comes out with a 1080 and a >12mp sensor with a better IQ in the D400, that would be more than perfect for me For D90 users, there are a lot of things to be desired. First and foremost is the AF engine and weather proofing. These features are essentials to birders.

Toto don't be like that.. I'm not ready to let go of my D90 and the piggy bank is not ready to be whacked open.. yet I'm still happy with the D90's AF engine

But really, the AF engine of the D90 is a far cry to that of the D300. It is not only noticeable, but sometimes it is annoying. But it is a good thing you wont be moving from D300 to D90 as you will have no idea what the D300 can offer, am sure the D300s is much more improved. However, D90 is better in IQ than the D300. That would keep you for a while hehehe.

Hi gabs,
The answer to your question is another question. "Can you wait?" as the D300s is still not out in the market yet. Also, reviews are still not that available and even if we do find reviews, they won't be from birders. Another thing is, for a good review to come out, the person doing the review should have spent a lot of time with the camera. For all we know, it might also come out with a battery defect like the D5000.

Aside from the added fps, what I like about the new model is the addition of the Quiet Drive Mode. The D200/D300 have been known to have a loud Shutter Slap, which at times can startle birds. This was made evident when JP used to do his Floating Blind approach. Although he was able to approach the birds much closer, the birds were clearly alarmed when they heard the slaps of the camera shutter from his D300. For all we know, it might also come out with a battery defect like the D5000. I hope it doesn't have the same problem. But I think the D5000 uses the el-en9 battery packs while the D300s uses the en-el3.

D300 + EN-EL3e is really top notch. I can do with one battery the whole day and get like a hundred more the next day. I bet though that D300s is more power hungry but hopefully it is not like the D200 that can drain the EN-EL3e in like 400 shots.

What I mean to say is that there is really no point retaining the D300 as a backup if you have the D300s. I would prefer the D90 as a backup body over the D300 because of the IQ, weight and video which you dont have with the D300. However, if you are starting from scratch, I would opt to wait for the D300s. D300s = D300 + D90. As I have said earlier, knowing the strenghts and weaknesses of the D90 as compared to the D300, there are a lot of things to be desired. If waiting is not an option though i'd pick D90 over the D300 on the assumption that I would eventually get the D300s to form a 2 body setup. For a single body rig, I'd still go for the D300.

When I bought the D300 the day it's available, I made a promise to myself that I'm going to skip at least the next iteration. So when rumors started coming out about the D300s ... I'm prepared. I have to resist the temptation! Anyway, next in line is a better glass anyway, whatever that'll be, a C or an N. Upgrading from D90 or D300, in my oopinion won't be a good idea ... unless you have extra money lying around doing nothing. I would say upgrading from D40, D60, or D200 (or earlier bodies) sounds like a good plan. I really don't care about the HD video at this point yet, but having that feature will be a good bonus.
