Posting a Japanese Bittern with chicks nesting on top of a tree overlooking Iligan River. Taken last June 5, 2000. The nest was located just few meters from Phil Nat'l Bank downtown of Iligan City Nikon N2020, Nikkor 35-70mm, hand held

Hi Binot, nice capture. I'll not familiar with Japanese bittern. Is that a new record or a new name of a bittern,

Hello doc, its an old name actually of Gorsachius goisagi from duPOnt's Philippine Birds Hehehe.... Elvin. I knew you have DuPont. That was also my first "guide" book before I bought the Kennedy Guide. By the way, how was your wife's Masteral going on? Give my regards to her.

Wow..... you continue to re-write the book, Elvin!!! According to the KG, Gorsachius goisagi (aka Japanese Night-Heron) is a "rare migrant." If your ID is right, this shot should be another record.

Yes I read it's rare and endangered, as this was taken year 2000. I wonder if you had had another encounter since.

Yes its very nice to see these birds hatched and I informed the management of PNB to keep an eye on the nest against poachers, glad to know they included the nest in their security details.
With a little luck and a lot of hardwork, the chances of encounter with rare species increase. I just got back to birding again after 6 years of hibernation although not 100% I hope I still have that luck in me...
Thanks guys! Its good to have a company who shares the same passion

I did not noticed that the eggs have hatched until I read the thread again. Please try to take some pictures when the Mother is not there. It would be interesting to see how they look now. Thanks Elvin.

Elvin, one of the experts say that this could be the Malayan Night Heron (G. melanolophus) which is known to breed in the Philippines. Do you have other photos of this bird at different angles?
