Hi Romy. I took this picture yesterday and process it today. The color of the bird came out looking like this. Is this true? Is the bird really this good looking? Your valued opinion would really be appreciated.

Hi Ely, I'm of course acutely color-blind, but I do have access to color-sensitive orbs. ;D I've a general impression that the photo is quite "cold"..... Pogito (my 12 year old son who must have hoarded my allocation for color sensitivity) tells me there is a serious blue cast. The RC Malkoha's plumage is supposed to be black. The branches and leaves appear too cold also. This is a simple white balance issue as indicated by the global effect of the cast (as opposed to localized color oddities), and quite easy to rectify. Knowing that you shot in RAW, try a color temperature of anywhere from 4800 to 6500, and just choose which nearly matches what you saw during the capture. Here's a capture of this species taken long ago in jpeg and it was a bit cold too with the camera's auto white balance. With Pogito's help, I warmed it up a bit in post process using PS warming filters. It would've been much easier to correct in RAW conversion. The hint of blue on the well-lit leaves was the reflection of the blue sky, and not a color cast.

Thank you Romy. The picture did not look good when I adjusted the temperature. Maybe I don't know how to do it properly. I reset everything and just did a little adjustment from the original. It looks more realistic now. Also not as good looking anymore. Heh heh heh. By the way, is the bird eating a cricket?

The second one is much better, Ely. I'd probably warm it up a bit more if it were mine. Can't see the prey very well, can you post a crop of the bird's head? Also, what brand and type of LCD display are you using? Mac or PC?

BTW, the reason I'm asking details about your display is I suspect there might be a color cast on it, that's why you might not be seeing what I and Pogito are seeing. Even to my color-blind eyes, the blue/cold cast is very apparent in both photos, albeit reduced in the second one. This is confirmed by the RGB numbers when I sample the breast of the bird (in front of the arrow in the screen capture below). That spot should be near black. If black has a (0, 0, 0) RGB value, that spot should be not far off. As you can see, the value of blue is much, much greater than green and red, confirming the cast towards the blue side.

I am using a Mac. Now that I took a crop of the bird's head, I can see that the picture was not taken properly. Thank you Romy for trying to save it. I have to try to take better pictures than this. By the way is this insect a cricket? Heh heh heh.

Yes, it could be a cricket Ely. I'd probably eliminate a mantis, as the "hands" aren't in the right location for a mantis.
