Nice shot Knightvin! I suspect that this bird is what is now regarded as the Chocolate Boobook (Hawk Owl) which was split from the Brown Hawk Owl. The longer tail and Mindanao location leads me to think so. Maybe you can post this in the Bird Identification thread so the experts can check.

Don't have updated materials on hand right now but I will research more on this species.

Amazing what you can get with 70 mm + film, Elvin! Well, just like our subjects (the birds) we have to live with what we have in order to survive. I made the best shots with the camera I owned. I used a hide to get closer to the birds in fact I almost got shot with an assault rifle because the security personnel thought I was an infiltrator with my body covered in grass to mimic my location. Thanks God he had a second thought!

Confirm taxon randi (i.e., the Chocolate Boobook). The migrant races (in Mindanao) japonica, and florensis, are now usually associated to the split species Northern Boobook (N. japonica), and both are of a lighter brown color including the crown, and belly splotching.
