Hi Ding, We were there January 1. The red fruits are not visible yet. At first glance, no fruits, but after looking closely, yeah there are fruits. The birds, mostly balicassiaos, were constantly moving. NO hornbills. The falconets were lots on the dead tree. We sighted red crested malkohas. But you see, it was so windy and showering most of the time we were there. Maybe now, the sun is out, there should be lots. telyd

i think in bulacan were lots of balete, some are fruiting this january some are not, the birds that i saw there, was tariktik, coucal with a long pointed red hair and black feathers all over, the natives there called it "mulawin" hahaha because of the red featherlike hairs in their foreheads, doves, some hornbills and in the ground are lots of wild philippine chicken, "labuyo", emerald green dove.

The black bird with the red crest is most likely the Red Crested Malkoha.

Yup its a nice place to visit, but lots of NPAs around in that area... mostly mountains and rugged terrains. its in norzagaray bulacan. last 2006 we saw a red orange feathered rail in the mountains, i dont now its name but thats what it look like. but do rails lived in the mountains? i just know that their habitat is in grassland, marshes or near water edge.

Hey, Zalvaje (what a creatively mischievous handle), I have the opportunity to go to Bulacan several times in a year, specifically in the Angat area since my work takes me there. Care to PM me the location of these Balate trees? Thanks.

{EDITED and sent to balarila as a PM, cc OP.}
Forum Rule:
4. Please don't post detailed bird locations on the boards, as this can be used by unscrupulous parties (hunters, poachers and the like) who are out to harm our subjects. We need to mention only the general area (ex. - Makiling, Subic, Candaba, etc.). If location detail needs to be shared, it can be done via email or PM.

Thanks, Zalvaje. Got your directions in my PM account, courtesy of Romy (Thanks, too, Romy).
I know that area very well. When I do find occasion, as work requires, to be in the area, will look for the tree.
BTW, to those who plan to visit Trees, there's not a lot of fruit. In fact, I couldn't see any last Saturday. But, of course, I was quite a distance away. The man (caretaker?) there said some recent strong rains washed away either the early fruits or the budding flowers so not much for the birds to feed on.
Still, may be worth a visit if you're after the Balicassiaos or the Red-crested Malkoha.

sorry bout my boboos! hehehe! next time i'll use PM or email for that matter!
know what i suggest that we need to plant more balete trees, specially the kind that bears small fruits! so that there are lots of foods for the birds. because lots of birds really come to visit balete trees. in my observation because there is not a lot of balete trees is our forest. maybe thats why birds dont visit some areas.
i think we should try to plant a balete tree for the birds and for the future of our sons and daughters to see what birds we still see today. because if we dont theres nothing for our kids to enjoy natures beautiful works.
