Final Update from the Screening Committee, National Museum Exhibit


Dear fellow photographers,

1. Mike Lu, head of the SC, has just transmitted to me the final list of photos to be exhibited. The 55 short-listed photos have been distilled to the following after review of the 100% crops to check sharpness and suitability for large prints.

45 photos - 12” x 15"
2 photos - 20” x 30”

Here are the thumbnails of the selected photos for the information of all concerned.

2. All concerned photographers may now start printing their photos. The recommended printing lab is JT Photo, although other labs are allowed if such other labs can print color-critical, exhibit-quality photos. The paper to be used should be matte finish (non-glossy, Kodak Pro Endura, or equivalent). The organizing committee will reimburse the printing cost of the submitted prints (please submit receipts, misprints or practice prints will not be reimburseable).

The deadline for submission of prints will on 5 pm, June 26, 2009 (Friday).


3. Standard Specification of Signatures or Watermarks (please conform, otherwise your prints will not be accepted):

4. Prints should be submitted to:

5. Please ask the lab printer to put each individual print inside a plastic bag/sheet to protect these from dirt, smudges, finger prints and the like. It’s also asked that a hard board backing (recyled carton may be used) be used to support your prints during handling and delivery. Do not roll, much worse fold the prints!

6. The schedule of reimbursements will be announced later.

7. For out-of-town photographers, they may send their ready-for-printing digital file to me, and I’ll have this printed together with my photos. I should receive the digital file not later than Tuesday night (June 23, 2009), as I plan to print mine the next day. Files should be of size 4500x3600 pixels for 12”x15”, in sRGB color space and saved as quality 11 jpeg. My email is [e-mail].

8. The exact schedule of exhibit opening and run will be announced later.

Beautiful! This exhibit will open a lot of people's eyes... not only about the beauty of our island birds but the skill and talent of our local wild bird photographers as well. Congratulations and mabuhay sa inyong lahat!

For standardization of the look of the photos to be exhibited, following are our specifications for Signatures or Watermark (SOWM).

1. The photographer may place a signature or watermark either at the lower left or lower right corner of the 12" x 15" or 20"x30" print. The choice of whether the SOWM is on the left or on the right is given to the judgment of the photographer, consistent with what is dictated by the composition of the photo.

2. The color of the SOWM should be dark gray (70% black) to black (100% black), the choice of shade is left to the photographer's discretion.

3. The SOWM may be composed of a signature, and/or website address or similar text, and the whole thing should be no larger than 1.5 inches in width and 0.75 inch high. In other words, the whole SOWM should fit inside an imaginary 0.75" x 1.5" box in either lower left or lower right corner of the 12" x 15" or 20" x 30" print. It is suggested that text in the SOWM be large enough to be readable from 1 meter away. Be cautioned though that too many things or text in your SOWM can be distracting and might degrade the aesthetics of your photo. I'd imagine the National Museum will print a photographer's directory (with details such as web galleries) anyway.

4. A clear distance of about 1 inch should be maintained between the SOWM and the edges of the photograph to allow some space for framing.


5. Here's an example of a signature, similar to what I'll use on my photos (distances not to scale):





6. TIP - for those who don't know how to place your handwritten signature on your photo, what I did is to sign a white sheet of paper with a marking pen. I photographed the sheet and then removed the white background in PS. I can then resize and place this digitized signature on my photo.

Q: Is a signature mandatory?

A: Nope, a signature on the photo is permissible (subject to the posted specs), but not mandatory. Note the permissive tone of the specs:

Just a correction the Small Minivet was mistakenly labeled as a Scarlet Minivet.

The photo was taken in Palawan, therefore, it's out of the range of the Scarlet and it's the only place a Small Minivet can be found. There is no yellow in the wing bars as well.

Update on Exhibit Opening

The photo exhibit is entitled: Jewels of the Philippine Forest, as taken from the speech of Dr Bob Kennedy during the launching of his book, Complete Guide to Birds of the Philippines in 2002.

The opening of the exhibit will be held at the South Wing, 5/f, Museum of the Filipino People at 6 in the afternoon.

Club anniversary party follows with a dinner buffet at one of the rooms. We are not charging for the dinner buffet and I would like to encourage members, specially newbies and the ones I have never met, to join us. Please confirm attendance with Cel Tungol asap (cel.tungol@citi. com).

We intend to invite festival sponsors, corporate partners and LGU partners as well.

I was about to send out the invitations when I realized that we did not settle the issue on the dress code. Filipiniana nga ba ? I am ready but I would suggest we make it optional. What you guys think

These photos should have the National Museum as its permanent home. If I were the head of the NM, I will plead the photographers to donate a copy to the Museum. . It will never be lost opportunity in the use of the space. The rental value of the room will never match the value of the photos and the great impact they will have on museum goers (especially students) in terms of environmental awareness and protection of our natural treasures. To put these photos side by side with the preserved birds of Sirs Icarangal (father and son) will be a + for natural museums. telyds
