Mr. Mike Lu, our WBCP president, just relayed to me that the Office of Sen. Angara will purchase rights to use bird photos taken at the the Sierra Madre area.
Here are the known specifics so far:
1. Only photos of Philippine endemics will be considered, priority will be given to Luzon endemics.
2. Submissions for evaluation and screening may be posted in this thread, at a size no larger than 900 pixels width or length.
3. The selected photos will be re-submitted later in high resolution version (standardized at 2400 pixels x 1800 pixels size, 8-bit TIFF, sRGB color space). The framing/cropping/composition of the final high-res photos should match that of the low-res photos.
4. No "major post-processing surgery" is allowed, except cropping, sharpening, resizing, mild noise reduction, and adjustments of exposure, contrast, brightness, levels and saturation.
5. A panel to be designated by the WBCP will choose twelve (12) photos, and these will be paid at the rate of PHP 10,000.00 per photo.
6. Deadline of submission, terms of use of the photos, and other details will be posted later in this thread.
7. Requests for more information or clarification may also be posted in this thread.
Good luck, birdnuts! ;D

He-he. Does Antipolo qualify as Sierra Madre?

The Admins of this forum also wisely labeled the online guide with "endemic" for birds that can only be found in the country. One may just also consult there.
Having said that, endemism is an evolving concept and some experts say more species are to be split as full endemics (not just subspecies), hence, the difference between the Kennedy Guide and our own Online Guide (say, for example, the Philippine Serpent Eagle, which was formerly a mere subspecies of Crested Serpent Eagle)
Hope this helps.

He-he. Does Antipolo qualify as Sierra Madre? Well, Antipolo is in the foothills of the Sierra Madre indeed. However, I believe the selection committee will prioritize captures from recent sorties to Baler, where Sen. Angara hails. If the 12 photos of endemics can not be completed, then I believe the net may be cast on a wider Sierra Madre area, just my personal opinion though. ;D

Hi Romy. You mentioned 12 endemics. Would you, if you know, be so kind to post the names of the 12 on this thread. Thank you very much.

Hi Romy. You mentioned 12 endemics. Would you, if you know, be so kind to post the names of the 12 on this thread. Thank you very much. Hi Ely, The Sierra Madre area is composed of lowland to montane forests, plus edge and fields. So most endemic birds ranging in these types of habitats in the central Luzon area can be included (this must number well over 50 species). The selection committee will select 12 photos from among all the endemics submitted, with priority on Luzon endemics. Romy

UPDATE - 7:45 am May 26, 2009
1. Based on an email from Mike L., the matted prints will be exhibited in the Senate by June 1! We are currently in discussion how to meet such a schedule. We will later post in this thread the deadlines, as well as the resolution of the final submissions (most probably will be increased so 12"x15" can be printable).
2. Terms of Use - non-commercial purposes only, i. e. for brochures, posters, etc., for a period of 12 months.
3. Terms of Payment - to be announced later.

LATEST UPDATE - 8:55 am May 26, 2009:
Considering that the date of exhibit is on June 1, 2009 (which is immovable), it is deemed not possible to supply the office of Sen. Angara with photos taken recently during Bongabon-Baler road sorties. There's simply not enough time to do the job as originally planned.
Mike, Prof. Jerrry and I would like to apologize for the inconvenience that may have been caused by the initial call for bird photos.
We will advise the office of the good Senator that the only possible way to meet the deadline is to use some of the existing, framed UP-Vargas photos. Many of the said framed prints are of Philippine endemics that were captured elsewhere but are also inhabitants of the Sierra Madre.
Mike is now selecting 12 photos from that exhibit, plus 4-5 alternates in case some of the framed prints are no longer available. We're sorry we can no longer consider other prints because of time constraints and non-uniformity of framing.
The scope of supply to the office of Sen. Angara will be:
1. Loan of 12"x15" framed prints for the June 1 exhibit, returnable to the photographer after the event.
2. Supply of high-resolution digital files of the exhibited photos -for non-commercial purposes only, i. e. for brochures, posters, etc., useable for a period of 12 months.
Pricing - PHP 10,000.00 per photo
Terms of payment - to be posted later
Deadline of submission of framed prints + hi-res digital files - to be posted later.
To PBPF photographers who were not participants in the UP Vargas exhibit, my sincerest apologies.
Romy

Ka Mastah,
May I inquire where did you make the printing and framing of the UP Exhibit pics/frames and how much so we can have our pics printed and framed there so there is uniformity, and also so that when there are calls like the Senate Exhibit, we can immediately have them at hand for submission to the selection committee.
Thanks!
Alain
PS,
Is it really not possible for the pictures of the PBPF Team who recently went to Baler to be included in the Senate Exhibit? There might still be a way for that, hopefully this can be reconsidered. Thanks!

Ka Mastah, May I inquire where did you make the printing and framing of the UP Exhibit pics/frames and how much so we can have our pics printed and framed there so there is uniformity, and also so that when there are calls like the Senate Exhibit, we can immediately have them at hand for submission to the selection committee. Thanks! Alain PS, Is it really not possible for the pictures of the PBPF Team who recently went to Baler to be included in the Senate Exhibit? There might still be a way for that, hopefully this can be reconsidered. Thanks! Hi Alain, The original intent was to tap from the captures in the recent Baler sorties and have these matted instead of framed. I got the call from Mike L. yesterday and posted the call for submission immediately. This morning, I got an email from Mike L. that the exhibit will be June 1 and that this date is fixed. Should we play out the original plan, we need to do the following tasks: 1. Deadline of submission of low-res captures - May 25 (Mon, should be yesterday) 2. Selection of 12 photos - May 25 (Mon, should be yesterday) 3. Submission of 12 high-res photos - May 26 (Tue, should be today) 4. Printing and matting - May 27-28 (Wed and Thu) 5. Delivery of matted prints - May 29 (Fri) Obviously, such schedule involving normal selection and production processes is no longer doable. Only the alternative - culling from existing UP-Vargas framed photos - is achievable, given that the deadline of delivery of the finished product is Friday (May 29) . The best way, perhaps, to have non-Vargas photos be included in the Angara exhibit is to email Mike Lu directly and attach the concerned low-res photos and other information. Yours truly is acting only as a messenger, and I have no decision-making authority on the project, nor contact with the project principal (office of Sen. Angara). Thus, the fastest way to get things moving outside the box is to get in touch with Mike himself. On the UP-Vargas photos, we had these framed in a small framing shop in Paranaque. The cost IIRC was about PHP 350.00 per frame (12"x15", frame and mounting included, package pricing for 120 frames). I guess any framing shop can duplicate the style if one can present a frame sample. Even the original shop that made these won't be able to duplicate the made-to-order frames unless samples are submitted. The following photographers were involved in the UP-Vargas exhibit and the framed prints were returned to these folks after the event, hence frame samples can be borrowed from any of them. 1. Martin Alvendia 2. JP Cariño 3. Ding Carpio 4. Chito Limchiu 5. Tina Mallari 6. Ralf Nabong 7. Nestor Non 8. Romy Ocon 9. Neon Rosell II 10. Mando Somintac 11. Rey Sta. Ana

FINAL UPDATE - 2:00 pm, May 26, 2009
Mike L. called me a few minutes ago to finalize the arrangements and below are the final points of information regarding this fast-track project.
1. The twelve (12) photos were selected from among those exhibited at UP-Vargas. Due to time constraints, it is no longer possible to accommodate other photos which are yet to be evaluated, printed and framed to the same style.
2. Mike has relayed to me his selection (listed in the next post) and a PM/email will be sent shortly to the concerned photographers. To those selected, please confirm and acknowledge via SMS (my cfone is +63 918 940 3802), email or PM to yours truly your participation in this project, given the terms enumerated here, on or before 5:00 PM of May 27, 2009. Failure to confirm before this deadline would be interpreted as non-interest in participation in the project, and the organizers will then utilize alternate photographs.
3. Priority was given to endemic species and to wider bird family representation. Likewise, aesthetics of the photo was given importance. Photos that are already featured in DOT Bird Books 1 & 2 were given less priority.
4. The framed 12"x15 photos, together with a CDR or DVD of the digital files used to print the said photos (8-bit TIFF), should be submitted to the following on or before 5:00 pm of May 28, 2009:
NILDA PASINDO c/o CONTECH INDUSTRIES PHILS., INC. Bldg. 15-A, Panorama Compound, Veterans Center, Taguig City Tel. 838-6589 and 837-2278 (back of Food Terminal, Inc. or FTI)
5. It is presumed that the concerned framed photos are in very good condition, damage-free and fit to be exhibited in the Senate. If a photo is damaged, this may be re-printed and re-mounted to the same frame by the concerned photographer. Should the frame be damaged, the photographer may use donor-frames from the same lot.
6. There is a change in the arrangement of the use of the framed photos. Instead of a loan, the framed photos will no longer be returnable but subject to reimbursement of production cost, as Sen. Angara will use the said items in other exhibits.
7. Terms of Use - supply of 12"x15" framed prints , and supply of high-resolution digital files of the said photos - for non-commercial purposes only, i. e. for brochures, posters, etc., useable for a period of 12 months.
8. Pricing – PHP 10,000.00 per digital photo, plus PHP 800.00 per framed print as reimbursement.
9. Terms of payment – to be posted later.
10. For more information, please feel free to call yours truly at cfone +63 918 940 3802.
