Birdwatching Sites of the Philippines, Volume 2 project
partnership with the Department of Tourism, Recreational Outdoor Exchange and the Wild Bird Club of the Philippines


Procurement of photos for the project.

Site photos and bird photos needed from the 14 identified sites to be promoted by the DOT, as follows:

Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte
Dos Cuernos (Hamut Camp), Cagayan Province
Mt Polis, Ifugao
Lake Danao, Taytay, Palawan
Sablayan, Mindoro Occidental
Mt. Makiling, Laguna
Bicol River Delta, Camarines Sur
Mt Canlaon, Negros Occidental
Rajah Sikatuna National Park, Bohol
Twin Lakes of Balinsasayao, Negros Oriental
Sohoton Natural Bridge National Park, Samar
Pasonanca Natural Park, Zamboanga
Mt. Kitanglad, Bukidnon
Agusan Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary, Agusan del Sur

The birdlist is still being finalized and will be released soon.

Schedule:

Submissions for consideration shall adhere to the following specs:
-72 dpi jpegs @ 9 inches width, filenamed according to the common name of species or name of site.

Please put the name of the photographer and list of site and bird photos included inside the CD.

Deadline for submission is Tuesday, May 19, 2009.
DVDs or CDs are to be delivered at the first floor counter of ROX, Building 1, Bonifacio High Street, Bonifacio Global City Taguig. Attention to Ms Macel Abejero, 0921-3434708

Submissions for final inclusion:
-300 dpi tiffs @ 6 inches width

Upon notification, by May 20 (Wednesday) or 21 (Thursday), high-res files are required to be delivered by May 25, (Thursday).

It is assumed that the photographer will submit publication quality images. Images that will require major post-processing shall be rejected.

Project Disclosures:

Aside from the guidebook, collateral materials shall be produced solely for its promotion and marketing, which may include brochures, posters, banners, streamers, booths etc. The price paid assumes the copyright owner's consent of such usage for a period not exceeding two years from the book launch date.

The producers of the book will print an initial run of 5,000 copies and reserve the right to reprint up to 15,000 copies more during the aforementioned two-year period.

The first run of the publication are to be given away for free while the next run/s will be for sale with a portion of the royalties going to the WBCP

Payment shall be made within 90 days of book launch on August 21, 2009.

Site photos will be priced at P 4000.00.

Commonly photographed birds will be priced at P 7000.00

Uncommon/rare bird will be priced at P 10,000.00

Notes:

1) The birds do not require to have been captured in situ among the listed sites, they are acceptable as long as they do not seem obviously out of place.

2) Flock shots (defined as shots having 10 or more birds) are considered as site shots.

3) The complete bird list will be sent soon. Please be ready with your photos.

Hi Paolo! (and everyone else)
This is already a call for submission. Anyone may submit species that are found in those aforementioned areas. The thrust for this volume has been agreed to be endemics.
The bird list shall be out soon but I guess it is safe to say that endemics have a favored chance of being chosen. Mike Lu is just trying to figure out the problem of how to afford the photos since with the rising quality of bird photography, a lot more species are available now. In Volume1, he came up with a scheme to acquire the necessary number of photos by creating a price tier for common and uncommon birds. He is now trying to figure out how to budget for this volume as everyone knows we have to acquire a lot more "uncommon" birds.
The next posting regarding this project shall probably be the birdlist.

Hi Ivan,

Just for clarification, what would be the aspect ratio of the photos? the actual dimensions of the photos?

if -72 dpi jpegs @ 9 inches width and -300 dpi tiffs @ 6 inches width, what would be the heights?

What would be the preferred orientation? Landscape or Portrait? which crop is more preferred? more bird or more environment? Thanks

The orientation preference of the graphic designer, I feel, is to show a little more of the bird's habitat, when it's for the site chapters but for the gallery, i think it is all bird mostly. It is up to the photographer to submit whatever image he/she feels to be optimal.

72dpi @ 9" is for the preview/selection process where a slide projector or laptop will be used for viewing.

Chosen photos need to be 300dpi @ 6" width, as this is meant to fit into the book size.

REVISION: FINAL SIZE OF SELECTED PHOTO IS TO BE 300dpi @ 8"

( I inspected the book, and its size is bigger than previously specced)
This is meant to allow a full spread 2 page use of a horizontal photo.

Is the submissions deadline final? Just realized there's an upcoming sortie in Baler on the 22-24 May. You may want to consider extending the deadline by a week to allow for the potentially rich harvest that weekend.

I will try to talk to the designer about a "special" consideration for the photos that may come after. The deadline set is because the guidebook team is scheduled for a meeting to select photos already. Only the designer has the capability to be flexible re the images he will want to use. No promises, regarding this, though.
The production schedule has been set and it might be troublesome to amend it.

Would it be fine to submit multiple photos of the same bird species (different pose, orientation, etc.)? Thanks.

Yes, definitely. A panel will have different standards of appreciation of a photo and a consensus will emerge so I think it is a good idea to submit different poses, but maybe not too many as we might deal with hundreds of shots.
