Movie recording * • 1920 x 1080 (1080P, 16:9) @ 20 fps • 1280 x 720 (720P, 16:9) @ 30 fps • 640 x 480 (4:3) @ 30 fps • Quicktime MOV format (H.264 video,linear PCM audio) • Up to 29 min 59 sec (or max file size 4 GB)
I wonder if 20 fps at 1080p is enough for smooth motion?

Here's a link to the first hands-on I've seen: www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/T1I/T1IA.HTMLooks like there's no jack for an external mic and no manual exposure control as well, very important features for bird videography. I guess I'll continue to rely on TCs on the 5D2 to get the reach, rather than on pixel density of the 500D. Shooting 1080p at 30 fps makes the capture more future-proof, as it's not guaranteed that we'll be able to meet the same birds again. The large 1080p frame also provides more leeway for cropping and processing when downressing to 720p. For those wanting to enter HD videography of birds without having to sell a kidney, the 500D will be heaven sent - 720p + 1.6x crop factor. For bird filmers that already have a 5D2, the features are a step backward since we can use TCs in place of 1.6 CF reach and retain great IQ (as a result of downressing from 21 MP to 2MP video). I guess we have to wait for the 50D's replacement to get 1080p at 30 fps (0r 24 fps), manual exposure and audio controls and 1.6 CF reach, all at an affordable cost.

Yes, there's M mode for stills as normal for a DSLR, but no manual exposure control in video.

This is a very good low-cost body, which beats other alternative available from the competition right now, if you need the pixel density and HD video.
It will not have the full features from it's high-end brothers, but will definitely appeal to those in a budget or just starting up.
Competition is good, it encourages innovation and most importantly drives the prices down. Making it affordable, means people will buy. It's win-win for both. ;D

Being a consumer DSLR it isn't surprising that it doesnt sport manual controls for video. Even the G9 P&S of Canon doesnt have manual for video. I read somewhere that Canon is in the process of creating a EOS-based professional video camera allowing you the use of EF lenses with AF. The downside is that it may cost more than a 1Ds3.
