New guy here from Southeastern Pennsylvania, USA. Glad to have found this site. I am retired and own mostly Nikon gear, the latest being a 300mm f/4 ED IF AF-S lens which I have yet to use in the field. I'm hoping it will work well with my TC17EII 1.7X converter. Wildlife photography is my main interest at this time.

Welcome to PBPF ... Benito(? we adress by first names here),
I have the same lens and TC, with my D300. It works well, with adequate light. Otherwise it will hunt, but still ok I prefer using the TC 14EII with the 300 f/4, as the image quality is still amazing. If I really need the reach more than IQ, that's when I use the TC17EII. 300 with TC are OK for general wildlife which you can get close to, but still not adequate (there's never ending need for more reach).
Replace the lens collar with a Kirk (or RRS, but I prefer the Kirk), as the included collar is not that good (it has design problems like the 80-400). Then invest on arca-swiss type of quick release, for compatibillity with better tripod heads.
Have fun with wildlife photography.
