These birds were feeding on a paddy being prepared for planting rice at Candaba. With a bright subject and so much light, it was fun pushing the limits of the 40D's AF.... ;D Whiskered Tern ( Chlidonias hybridus) 40D + 100-400 IS, 400 mm, ISO 200, f/5.6, 1/1600 sec, manual exposure, hand held: Romy

Easy if you can do preliminary shots, Raul - just shoot them, look at the histogram, then adjust exposure as necessary. If using Av-priority and the BG is field or ground, try a -2/3 EC, shoot some, then review the histogram. I prefer M mode fo all my shots, especially BIFs. I normally shoot initially with the metering needle about 2/3 stops to the left of center for white birds with neutral backgrounds. Then I review the histogram and adjust shutter speed if necessary. Ka Romy, do you use evaluative or center-weighted?

I prefer to use evaluative in all shots, Rey. Ka Romy, do you use evaluative or center-weighted?

Thanks, Idol. will do that. i often use spot metering for white birds, but then the background gets too dark. will remember your tips.

Great timing !!! The water splash and swirl and the head of the bird in the middle of it all add so much character and action on this capture Romy.
