Folks, the moon is at "perigee" tonight, meaning it's closest to earth in its elliptical orbit. That will make it around 14% bigger and 30% brighter than when it's farthest. It will be closest at around 7 pm, but I reckon the best imaging times will be between 8 pm - 10 pm when it's a little higher and light will pass through less atmosphere. Looks like the skies over Metro Manila are clear for the first time in weeks..... so get out your long lenses, spotting scopes or P&S cameras and let's have a full moon party!!!

Some tips on moonshooting:
1. Recommended starting exposure for a full moon is "Moony 11" or f/11 and 1/ISO. For example, f/11, ISO 100 and 1/100 - 1/125 sec. Shoot a few test shots first, then check the histogram to fine tune exposure.
2. MLU or Live View + remote switch + tripod are a must for sharpest results. Shutter speeds can be as slow as 1/30 sec, but faster Tv is better in reducing shake.
3. Shoot at low ISO (100 to 200) for maximum DR and least noise.
4. Shoot in RAW of course.
5. Manual focus aided by live view is more accurate than AF, take a few shots per MF setting, then refocus manually and repeat the process. This will increase the chances of getting one in optimum focus and when the atmosphere is at its clearest. It's easy to select the sharpest captures later. If Av, Tv and ISO are the same, the most detailed captures will yield the largest file sizes.

Very nice, colorful full moon! Looks like I'll miss this party. I set up my tripod just before 7 pm and the skies were clear. I decided to wait till the moon gets a bit higher, but when I returned at 7:30 pm, clouds were already covering Paranaque. Same here Romy. I went out for early dinner with my family hoping to get a shot of the biggest moon of the year when I get back but it was covered by clouds here in QC.

I'm one night late to the party. The skies allowed me a few shots last night - perhaps my largest moon ever in a single, uncomposited shot. The moondisk itself got about 9 MP, while the black BG accounted for 12 MP, for a total of 21 MP thrown. ;D MANILA MOON - JANUARY 11, 2009 (22:44:03 local time). Canon 5D2 + Sigmonster (Sigma 300-800 DG) + stacked Canon 2x/Sigma 1.4x TCs, 2263 mm, f/25, 1/80 sec, ISO 320, manual exposure, manual focus, Manfrotto 475B tripod/3421 gimbal head, uncropped full frame resized to 800x533. Sorry guys, can't join you this time around. It's drizzling here in Cebu, and cloud cover is so thick, you can't even locate the moon. :-(

Excellent captures, everyone.
I was at the windy roofdeck of GA Towers last Saturday shooting the moon too. ;D Unfortunately the admin restricts access up to 1800H only so I wasn't able to shoot at the time it was closest. Was able to take some shots but I haven't downloaded them yet. Not sure if I got a decent one, though.

I was leaving my friend's place in Times Street QC at about 6:30pm and on my way out of her garden, I saw this beautiful moon smiling so bright. Had to take out my cam but I had only my short lens. Canon 40D, Sigma 17-70mm, SP ISO 1600 handheld, flash
