Finally I was able to test this lens matched with a 2x Kenko TC that AF with the 40D ar Hardin yesterday. It was a sunny day that gave me good lighting. Just preparing and practicing for the opening of Candaba. ;D 40D + 600 mm f4 IS + 2x Kenko TC, f8, 1/320 sec, ISO 200, Tripod & Gimbal support. Nice captures neon, how did you manage to get AF on the 40D? tape trick? Thanks, No Mate! I have a Kenko 2x TC (C-AF 2X TELEPLUS MC7) that AF with f4 or faster lens. I just multiply the exif values as the camera doesn't know it's there. It also AF on the 30D mated to an f4 lens. ;D

So I need that MC7 ( I already have the PRO 300 version, won't work on this, right?). Where I could buy the MC7, Neon, if you wouldn't mind. Thanks.

Ed, I bought mine and Tina's in a small shop in Thailand, I was just suppose to buy another 1.4x but when I saw the AF written on it I tested it with my 30D + 300 f4 and to my amazement it AF. Maybe you can just google the model, really don't know where else you could find it. I think tapping the last 3 pins on the TC would make it AF? never tried it but I know this works. Lets just wait for someone who has experience to confirm and show how it is done.

Was able, on todays sortie at La Mesa watershed, to get close to this Pacific Swallow that I was able to get it Full Frame. 40D + 600 mm f4 IS + 2x Kenko TC, f16, 1/100 sec, ISO 200, Tripod and Gimbal support, Full Frame, PPed and resized. Thanks Ding, JP & Martin for the company, really enjoyed it even though we got dipped by the Ruddy Kingfisher but was able to get a lifer. Dip - The most dreaded term in birding vocabulary; to miss out on a bird that you have been looking for.

Wow! really sharp! I also have an MC7 but it's the Soligor brand, not Kenko. works wonders with my manual focus 135mm f/2. Haven't tried it yet with the 600mm though as i thought quality wouldn't be as good. I'm still comfortable with the 1.4x. And besides, i don't have AF to begin with..

Seeing that Ed has a 5D, I'd like to note that the cheapo Tamrons (I have a 1.4 and 2x) vignettes badly on a full frame body.... not sure if the cheapo Kenko does the same. However, as long as you intend to use these on 1.3x or 1.6x bodies, optics are great and AF works at f/8.

Dip - The most dreaded term in birding vocabulary; to miss out on a bird that you have been looking for. I disagree. There must be a more dreaded term that applies to the act of leaving too early and missing out on a rare lifer that those who stayed behind caught. Peace, Martin...peace.

I went to UP this afternoon to shoot the PNJ. It was a lighting nightmare but I was able to find a location where there was no back light. I did not realize that the 2x kenko TC was still installed so I shot it at 1200 mm. Philippine Nightjar Caprimulgus manillensis Endemic 40D + 600mm f4 IS + 2x Kenko TC, f8, 1/30 sec., ISO 1600, Tripod & Gimbal support, In available light, Re-sized Full Frame.

Tried this setup in San Juan, Batangas just to make sure that I'm ready when Candaba opens maybe I'll stack another 1.4x when the ducks are in a distance. Marsh Sandpiper ( Tringa stagnatilis) - San Juan, Batangas November 4, 2008 40D + 600 mm f4 IS + 2x Kenko TC (1200mm w/AF), f12.6, 1/320 sec, ISO 200, Tripod & Gimbal support, Raw capture in available light

All great shots Neon! There doesn't seem to be too much of a performance hit on your lens with that 2X Kenko attached! Great work :-)
