I finally found some time to process the shots I took last January 9th at the vast fishponds of Sto. Tomas, La Union.
This seems to be the first record of this migrant in the Philippines. Saunder's Gull (Larus saundersi)
Shooting info - Sto. Tomas, La Union, January 9, 2015, Canon 1D Mark IV + EF 500 f4 IS, 500 mm, f/4, ISO 640, 1/2000 sec, manual exposure in available light, 475B/516 support, major crop (identical settings for both images).
And a more common visitor in soft, golden light.
Whiskered Tern (Chlidonias hybridus)
Shooting info - Sto. Tomas, La Union, January 9, 2015, Canon 1D Mark IV + EF 500 f4 IS, 500 mm, f/4, ISO 1250, 1/2000 sec, manual exposure in available light, 475B/516 support, near full frame.

I was interested to see your shots of this gull and although very far from being a gull expert (or any other kind of expert!) was puzzled by the black bill on the bird.
I am wondering if it might be in fact be a Bonaparte's Gull that has wandered across the ocean from the US?

Thanks for the comments, Mick! I'm puzzled too on the dark bill, hope our experts will chime in to enlighten us.

Hi Des,
I have several more and will post these on Sunday when I'm back home. Any particular part of the bird you wish to examine?

A nice view of the upper wing would be nice. Is it still around and twitchable?

A nice view of the upper wing would be nice. Is it still around and twitchable? Not sure if it's still around, as this was over three weeks ago. I've seen a lot of whimbrels and a curlew in the area too, plus the usual water birds. I'll try to post close-up shots of the pertinent parts of the bird.

Thanks, Tonji. Des, here's a couple of additional images. Hope you can nail the ID based on the visible details.

Thanks Romy. The stubby black bill is the obvious feature, but the wing patterns above and below confirm it. Des
