It is the first day of the year and while every one was reveling at the stroke of midnight, I slept thru the night and woke up fresh for the first bird that I will see on the first day of 2014. I was not disappointed to see the Coppersmith Barbet (Megalaima haemacephala) 5 1/2 inches after searching for the source of the constant call of this bird. I did not find the bird making the call but saw this one drilling a hole of a dead branch on a live tree. I find it unusual that he would go to 3 different holes, undecided which one to finish. Canon EOS 1DX, Canon EF 800mm f5.6L IS USM, Gitzo GT3530LS tripod, M-3.6 Mongoose Gimbal Action Head. Manual exposure in available light. 1/640 sec., f/5.6, ISO 800

Love the dramatic lighting on the background. Great start for the year Tito. Thank you Martin. I have not had the chance to go back yet and I wonder if there is any progress on the hole that the Barbet is drilling.
