I got a call from my good friend Kieron Tan of Bacolod asking me to plan a trip to Bacolod because the Spotted Wood Kingfisher and Variable Dwarf Kingfisher are showing up in different places. He also said that there is a nesting Visayan Hornbill in Dumaguete, plus the possibility of seeing the Flame-templed Babbler. It took a couple of weeks but when we did finalized the date, we made the rounds in Bacolod & Dumaguete. Weather was not very cooperative and the birds were not as visible as expected. In spite of this we were quite happy being able to photograph some birds including this lifer the Variable Dwarf Kingfisher. Canon EOS 1DX, Canon EF 800mm f5.6L IS USM, Gitzo GT3530LS tripod, M-3.6 Mongoose Gimbal Action Head. Manual exposure in available light. The Variable Dwarf Kingfisher (Ceyx lepidus) 5 3/4 inches is uncommon and it was a lifer for me to see and photograph it for the first time. 1/13 sec., f/5.6 ISO 3200 1/25 sec., f/5.6, ISO 1600 1/20 sec., f/5.6, ISO 1600

Very nice, Ely! Congrats on the lifer! I hope to get the VKF for the first time this week in South Cotabato. Thank you Ramon. It will be an exciting trip for you not only for the V DKF but also for the sub species of the ODKF. There are three Dwarf Kingfishers in the KGB, the other one is the PDKF that we photograph in Polillo Island. Good luck and looking forward to see your pictures.
