For the past weeks, two immature PHILIPPINE HAWK-EAGLES (Spizaetus philippensis, presumably the philippensis subspecies, an uncommon endemic in Luzon), have been spotted roaming around BK Valley, Mt. Banahaw. Lydia Robledo was among the first to photograph one. I saw one from 200+ meters away on a couple of occasions. Yesterday, I was able to slowly get within 50 meters before it flew away. Nothing escapes their eagle-eye vision! It is so heartening that these majestic raptors are thriving and breeding in Mt. Banahaw. Canon 1DX, Canon 800 mm lens, tripod. F/5.6, ISO-800, 1/100 second. This shot was taken from about 90 meters. It is showing off its beautiful back feathers. F/5.6, ISO-800, 1/100 second.

At 50 and 90 meters the pictures came out very nice. I guess you did not have time to add a 1.4X TC to bring the bird closer. It is indeed a beautiful bird. Well done Ramon & Mabuhay.

Yes, in the rush to shoot this PHE after it was spotted, Chris and I forgot the extender. But ever since Coron, I have not used the extender because the image quality of the 1DX is so good without it. I find that the extender reduces the IQ and really slows down the focusing of the 1DX (more than it did the 1D Mark IV).

That explains why you did not use the TC. I agree with you the focussing of the 1DX is faster and more accurate. Thank you Ramon for sharing your experiences.

Wow! Excellent shots of the PHE, Ramon! All I could manage is a 200m shot from my 300 f4 + 1.4x TC

As I said, it takes "blood, sweat & tears" + mud, rain, fog, 'accidents' to take beautiful photos like this.
