I found a patch of red flowering bushes on the edge of a cliff on Mt. Banahaw at 3,000 feet above sea level -- 500 feet above and a 15-minute hike from the local community at BK Valley. Yesterday was my 3rd morning of birding there, because many montane birds were showing up regularly between 6:30-8:00 a.m., such as the Mountain Leaf-Warbler, Fire-Breasted Flowerpecker, Green-Backed Whistler and Metallic-Winged Sunbird, as well as the usual montane birds there. I was testing the Canon 1DX camera, which I like better than my 1D Mark IV, because it focuses faster, shoots faster and processes faster -- which is important when shooting fast, small montane birds. The downside is that the 1DX is full frame, compared to the 1.3x cropping of the 1D Mark IV. It was quiet and I was about to pack up when this unknown flycatcher arrived and perched about 15 meters away from my hide/tent. It was a female MUGIMAKI FLYCATCHER -- a LIFER for me! ;D According to Wikipedia, "mugimaki" means "wheat-sower" in Japanese, which is a curious name for a flycatcher. While the Mugimaki FC passes through Japan, it breeds in Siberia and China. Canon 1DX camera, 800 mm lens, tripod. F/5.6, ISO-1600, 1/1000 second, manual exposure.

The Mugimake Flycatcher sure looks good and this is the female. Good decision in deciding to go for the 1DX. You will not regret it at all. Well done Ramon & Mabuhay.

Wow, another great addition to your growing BK bird list, wish I could jump my jail sentence and go up the mountain right now! It is not only a lifer for you but the first photo of this species posted in this forum. Congratulations on this historic capture, Ramon!

Thank you, William.
Thank you, Neon, but mine is not the first photo of this species posted in this forum. Nelson Khor's post dated 12/31/08 has a photo of a female Mugimaki FC. Adri Constantino's post dated 2/26/10 has a photo of a male Mugimaki FC taken in Mt. Kitanglad.

Thank you, Tateo. I assume the MFC does migrate from Japan. What does "Mugimaki" mean in Japanese?

Beautiful captures Ramon. Your life list must be long by now, yet so many other species to go!
